I've probably missed the multi-page thread I expected to find on this, not having been here much recently, but Suspiria on Blu-ray Disc in the UK is surely worth a mention, isn't it?

If the PQ & SQ live up to the hype, it'll be astonishing:

On 18 January 2010 Nouveaux Pictures/Cine-Excess will issue Dario Argento's Suspiria on DVD and Blu-ray.

Dario Argento's horror classic SUSPIRIA comes to DVD and, for the first time ever, Blu-ray in January 2010 having undergone a brand new high definition transfer courtesy of Nouveaux Pictures and Cine-Excess. Digitally remastered from HD, this brand new presentation has already led critics to claim, "Suspiria has never looked better. It has never sounded as good, either." (John Millar, Film Critic, Sunday Mail) and to hail it as "a stunning makeover for one of the greatest horror films ever made." (David Edwards, Daily Mirror).

Both formats also come with a host of newly commissioned extras including a brand new documentary featuring director Dario Argento and composer Claudio Simonetti and a feature length audio commentary by Argento experts Alan Jones and Kim Newman.

Inspired by Thomas De Quincey's Suspiria de Profundis and co-written by Argento and his long-term partner Daria Nicolodi, SUSPIRIA is Argento's undisputed masterpiece of Grand Guignol horror, hitting new peaks of terror through its stunning photography (courtesy of Luciano Tovoli), eye-popping production design and terrifying atmosphere of dread and death.

Suzy Bannnion (Jessica Harper) is an American ballet student, travelling to Germany to study at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento's breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.

Utilising complex lighting systems, intense film processing techniques, wire-guided cameras and multi-layer music recording (highlighting a superb Goblin score), Argento paints a masterpiece of terror on a technically impeccable canvas.

SUSPIRIA (cert. 18) will be released on DVD (£15.99) and Blu-ray (£19.99) by Nouveaux Pictures on 18th January 2010.

This is great news,as i passed on the other recent blu-ray release after the mediocare reviews.Looks like some interesting extra's and pretty cool artwork too,can't wait!

No news about the soundtrack, if its the original mix and not the remix that have been out on DVD from Anchor bay and others?

It will not have the Anchor Bay mix as far as I am aware.

Personally think the Cine-Excess "taking trash seriously" 'neon' branding is a bit much on the packshot, especially as, aesthetically, Suspiria hardly constitutes what most would consider 'Trash' and academics, critcs and audiences have been taking the film seriously for sometime now.

I notice there's a post on the Blu-ray.com forums (by Wilson Bros) suggesting at least one scene is sourced from a different, inferior, print to the rest of the film. I'm sure all is good overall though.

We have confered with Michael Mackenzie - who is something of an authority on transfers of Suspiria - and he mentioned that there is one scene where the original neg may have been damaged and that all copies revert to another source for the damaged section.

Don't think anyone expected much more than whether the transfer was good or not. Not much to ask when everyone know how awful the Italian Blu-ray transfer is...

Does anyone know why HMV have no record of this release on their system?

It's not available to pre-order on their site, and their computer has no record of it in store.

I ask because I have a HMV voucher burning a hole in my pocket, and this would be a nice way to use it.

I'm surprised Michael MacKenzie hasn't put a review up on DVD Times yet.

The HMV matter is currently being looked into by Cine Excess, so should be resolved shortly.
