I've never seen this one, but has anyone got the double DVD set from Stormovie in Italy?

I might be wrong, but that looks like it could just be the same as the X-Kult Video version which was a 2 disc version with 2 versions of the film (the fun XXX version and the completely pointless X version without the horse diddling - eh, no horse diddling? Whats the point?). The film is a D'Amato classick, but it does tail off in the last 30m or so. But up until then it is great sleaze with lots of great sex and violence.

All that I know about the Italian Stormovie release is that both versions feature an English language audio track, and the uncut version features an anamorphic transfer.

How does this measure up to Tinto Brass' (well, loosely speaking!) Caligula? Is as sleazy, as nasty, or any more entertaining?

Well, in terms of sex it does out do its role model in one instance, the aforementioned scene of an ugly fat woman whacking off and then slobbering on a horses schlong, which for me equals quality viewing. And in terms of violence, the spears up the arse scene is also something quite special.

However, on the whole, none of these cash-ins/rip-offs can compare to the Penthouse classick that is Caligula, which is without doubt one of my all time favourite films of all time. D'Amato's film is the best of those that followed, but still comes no where close to that masterpiece!

D´amato also made a Caligula porno in 1998, CALIGOLA - FOLLIA DEL POTERE, bad bad bad...
CALIGULA 2 on the other hand is decent fun, Gabriele Tinti gets a sore bottom...
But the Tinto Brass/Penthose version is just unbelievable...not to mention the behind-the-scenes documentary from the 70s (can´t remember the title, but included on one of the dvd-releases), just fantastic stuff, you´ll laugh at Gore Vidal and you´ll laugh with the penthouse guy with the golden chain (what a guy...)!

I was going to buy that D'Amato porno on DVD-R some time back, but decided against it as I thought it might be a bit pants. I would like to pick up the 2 porno's he made with the sets of 'Caligula 2', even though they aren't very good (well, apparently so, I've only seen 1 of them and it wasn't great but....hey ho, I sometimes get the hankering to see these things - usually after watching 'Caligula 2').

The D´amato pornos from the early 80s are bad, but at least the music is swinging and it´s not completly unwatchable (saw one about 2 weeks ago called LABRA VOGLIOSE for example, couldn´t recommend it to anyone, but it wasn´t a complete waste), the hundreds made later on are such incredible crap. I hope i´ll never have to watch one of them again in my life... (but i guess it´s futile hoping for that)

Yeah, his 80's XXX flicks are quite boring, but like you say, they do have those fine soundtracks (usually from the Black Emanuelle films) and are atleast worth a gander.

I liked the song that opens and closes the film. Quite the toe tapper, but its not a very good film - the porno inserts are not very good either.

I watched the uncut original Caligula years ago on a US DVD which I think was on the Penthouse label. The picture quality was terrible and the transfer was full frame, which didn't exactly help matters.

I have since got hold of the Arrow 4 DVD set and the image quality is a vast improvement. I'm sure I'll get around to watching it again at some point.
