That's a truly lacking The Thing Blu-ray release if you ask me. Where are the extras from the SD release?

The HD-DVD version is way better. Looks to me like some of the extra features may be available via BD Live access only. Pah!

And to think, there were those who were suggesting we might have to wait ages to get The Thing on Blu-Ray.....

Read and noted. Can't see The Thing being released without the extra's that the SD-DVD & HD-DVD had. Surely these are just early specs?
Anyhow it's a buy for me, the HD print and dts-HD surround will do it for me.

I notice that you bought into HD-DVD fairly near the end of the format war Marc - do you feel at all bitter?

More to the point, why is it exactly that blu ray has a dearth of extras - is it really because the studios haven't 'blu-rayed' their supplementary material yet, because that sounds a bit odd?

All the extra's on the HD-DVD were in SD so I'm thinking early specs myself.

HD-DVD looks astounding, but to be honest I haven't had a great deal of time to actually sit down and relax with a movie of late.

Yes, but note the specs - it's on a BD-25, which is 5GB smaller than its comparative HD-DVD release. Maybe that would account for the loss of supplementary features?

So whilst a selling point of Blu-Ray over HD-DVD was it's larger capacity, the reality is that many Blu-Ray titles are actually being put out on smaller capacity discs than HD-DVD. Not that I wish to see HD-DVD resurrected - the format war is done and dusted, I'm just pointing out a fact, is all. Former HD-DVD-only titles are now being released on lower capacity discs. Now if Universal had gone the whole hog and remastered these titles and put them on 50GB Blu-Ray discs, that might be something worth celebrating!

£2.98 for The Thing? I remember buying my copy as part of a - wait for it - three for £50 (!!) promotion HMV ran towards the end of 1999 when DVDs were still hiding in dark and dusty corners of shops. I still have the reciept in the box.

Re: Universal Blu-ray horror Inc The Thing dts-HD

I wonder if the UK are finally going to be treated to an anamorphic version? At that price it would be an out and out bargain. Under £3, that's cheaper than a nights rental. How do they make any money?
My 1st UK DVD cost £21.99 from WHSmiths, that was nearly 9 years ago.

HD DVD has been great fun over the past 7 months. The sales are superb, with discs as low as £3.99 at HMV (online).

I bought an EP30 (as a spare) for £50, and the Heroes & Planet Earth boxed-sets for £28 - a total of £78. You'll struggle to find just the discs for that on Blu-ray!

Current totals are 95 HD DVD (with 8 on the way) and 54 BDs (with 10 on the way).

The HD DVD of The Thing is terrific. I think I paid around £5.
