    3-D Digital / 3-D TV / All things 3-D

James Cameron is a strong advocate of 3D Digital and sees it as a sure way of getting people back into cinemas. It's certainly gaining some momentum... Can't wait to see it myself.

Heard about this years ago, everyone either thought I was mad, or James Cameron was mad.

TBH i thought this thread before opening it would be about George Lucas. As his latest attempt of ringing every last cent from the dead dog. Is he is planning 3D editions of Star Wars 4-6.

Why, i am not sure?, but it might be interesting to see the millenium falcon fly over your head while in the cinema.

I reckon the best way to get people back into cinemas is to make a decent film every now and again.
It's a radical concept, I know, but what the hey, we can hope.

So, when they talk about 3D digital - does that still involve wearing silly glasses? If so, count me out. Not interested in the slightest.

As mrb says, try making a decent film now and then - that might prove to be a greater incentive to get people back into cinemas. Otherwise, what you'll end up with is a novelty 3D thing for a year or so, but once that wears off - what then? We're still back to the thing of there not being very many decent movies to go and see.

I have to wear silly glasses when I watch films anyway, if I don't want it to be blurry.

I dunno the vanity of some people
I mean it's not like you'd be the only one in the room wearing them.

Also if they are using the kind of glasses I'm thinking of, they aren't as silly as the Imax Glasses.

Most probably the kind for the digital projection

Re: Is 3D Digital the Future?

This debate is gaining momentum - Cameron will be making a keynote speech at this week's Cinema Expo about the possibilities of getting Digital 3D into cinemas.

And there's me I thinking that you lot would find this development exciting... I guess not.

Re: Is 3D Digital the Future?

In the past, cinema had to reinvent itself in a bid to claw back lost revenue when TVs became popular in the 50s – hence there was an abundance of gimmicks – such as CinemaScope, 3-D and the like.

Now more than ever, Cinema needs something to give it an exclusive edge – something that cannot be replicated in the home (for the foreseeable future, anyway) in order to survive and this new 3-D process is definitely the way to go, IMO.

There will always be a place for traditional-style filmmaking but it will become limited to independent films, IMO and the tent-pole releases that litter the holiday seasons will have to be made in a way that brings the wow factor back into theatres…

Al it needs now is for every cinema to spend (or get a lottery grant) for a Digital projector and we can all watch digital 3D. Trouble is how many cinemas are going to fork out £10,000+ (per screen) for the equipment and building work? The lottery funded projectors that were dished out only went to arthouse cinemas or to cinemas near to Universities etc... Hardly any mainstream cinemas got one.

I saw Chicken Little in 3-D - great it was too! The film's not too great, when compared to similar types of flicks but the 3-D definitely made it worth seeing in the cinema.

My local cinema was only built in 2002, so it must have had one installed prior to opening.

If it means I can stop making myself giddy at home sitting in a darkened room with my shutter glasses on I'll be a happy man...though I doubt we'll see remastered 3D prints of Friday the 13th 3D, Jaws 3D or the Creature From The Black Lagoon anytime soon

or Spacehunter Adventures in the Forbidden Zone
or Starchaser The Legend of Orin
    or Metalstorm
    etc etc

Really though no reason not to, isn't one of the major benefits of Digital supposed to be VERY cheap distribution? So it wouldn't be out of the question for a Cinema to get a remastered 3D film in for one week and send it back. Much cheaper 1 non-degrading harddrive of the film than about 6 huge Spools or rapidly damaging film.

But it won't happen of cause, even though it would rule.

The distribution would be very cheap indeed. It's the cost of upgrading all the cinemas to Digital that is holding this back. £10,000+ per screen, maybe more, depending on the mods needed, making space for the new projectors, new portholes knocking through the booth walls etc. It's not cheap for a regular cinema to upgrade to digital projection.

Re: Is 3D Digital the Future?

I know all that but I mean for an upgraded place to show those specific films as well would be quite cheap.

Also you said about normal chain cineplexes not getting the money for the projectors, do you really think charity money should be given to the likes of Cineworld?

You're nopt the only one. But try wearing 3D glasses AND you're regular glasses - it's a near impossible feat to achieve.

Maybe a better word than 'silly' would be 'impractical' for people such as myself. That's why I wouldn't be interested. I remember 3D in the cinema in the 80's - and it was terrible. Really bad. Though the exploding shark at the end of Jaws 3D was interesting.

I've tried it, with the ones I have at home, it works fine.

I'd like to know how those ones work without ill effects if you tilt your head.

I read about Cameron and Lucas pushing new 3D technology some time back. It's supposedly a massive improvement over previous 3D cinema undertakings so I for one am really looking forward to experiencing these developments. It could be the revolution of cinema and could lead on to a similar revolution for home cinema a few years down the line.

It turns out Cameron is to busy discovering the remains of Christ, to be bothered with his 3D crusade.
He needs to get his priorities straight.
I've heard of finding god, but this is ridiculous....

Re: Is 3D Digital the Future?

I'm sure I read a while back that this 3D technology wasn't limited to just those movies that were made for 3D.
All they have to do is run the movie through some software and it can convert anything.
I say bring it on, the more interest/profit, the more re-released movies in 3D which I for one don't mind a bit and in a best case scenario in the not too distant future, every movie you take home (whatever the format) will have the 3D option.

I mean, tell me the thought of Zanner pre-ordering his copy of 'Cannibal Holocaust 3D' doesn't warm your heart just a little.
