Re: Redemption Films Original VHS Releases

Redemption were really unfortunate to have been submitting their films during the reign of James 'I Know How To Direct Your Films Better Than You' Ferman. So many of those which were cut ( for stupid reasons ) would sail through today.

Redemption were one of the reasons I got back into horror movies after a bit of a ( brief ) lull. They released so many of the kind of films we clamour for here.

Re: Redemption Films Original VHS Releases

I still have an old copy of The Darkside (back in the days when it was a fairly good read), which had a brilliant in-depth review section of all their VHS releases (up to that time) by John Martin. It opened my eyes to films like 'Haxan', 'Flavia the Heretic' etc. etc.

Are there any plans to re-release the Jezebel's The Erotic Dreams of Cleopatra on DVD, which I believe was passed uncut by the BBFC.

No, Redemption's rights expired years ago.

    Marc,
Did the titles cost an arm & a leg to license back then?.........and the ones that Redemption no longer have rights to....would the price for them be sky high now there is more of a market for such titles?

No, they didn't. Before DVD came along the asking prices were much fairer (you wouldn't believe how low some of the asking prices were!). The titles we released back in the nineties were not being pursued by other companies. We were the only company putting this obscure stuff out.

This obviously makes a huge difference now, where you might have three companies bidding on the same title.

Redemption and Jezebel was my first adventure into sleaze-land and my first experiences with Franco and Rollin came from that. And of course my nr 1 favorite movie, Bay of blood. So that company has meant a lot to me during my "childhood" in eurocinema.

God, i remember picking up KILLER NUN at the forbidden planet in Dublin in the early '90s...and bringing up my VCR to a long gone mate's house to rip FLAVIA THE HERETIC and MARK OF THE DEVIL...shame on me!

Ack, it was all sharing and caring then...er, a belated sorry Marc for the lost revenue...

I'd suspect it is the full version (I'm not 100%), as Redemption often submitted complete prints without pre-cutting. I was thinking of buying that one too, so if you could post your thoughts after you see it I'd appreciate it. Feel free to mention if there is a priest in the film. If there is, my money's on him. You can get alot of these Redemption VHS titles 2nd hand at Amazon for about Ģ2.

It's uncut, and features a much better print than that found on the American DVD release (as Watch Me When I Kill).

Re: Redemption Films Original VHS Releases

During a sleepless night last night I was looking through issue 10 of the Cold Sweat fanzine published in 1994 by Trevor Barley and Media Publications. It had an overview of the first 43 tapes issued by Redemption. An interesting tale of masters promised but not delivered or unable to be found, as well as some notable restorations (Baron Blood to name just one).

How much more complicated it must be now when movie fans expect their films to be not only uncut, but top notch quality and in the correct aspect ratio...

Also interesting to see how times have changed, when Sadomania was rejected outright by the BBFC and Mark of the Devil had to be totally eviscerated to even be granted a certifitate.

You're not wrong there, the DVD is awful. The Redemption VHS was in far better shape - it's a great movie too! But hasn't someone else now picked this up for R1, or was it VCI who went back and did a remastering job..? Whatever it is, I'm sure I've read that a better release is on the cards.

I ended up going for the Redemption VHS a while back. Found the film kind of dull but it had its moments.
