    List of films I can't get :(

    The Bargee
    The Admirable Crichton
The Case of the Mikkinese Battle Horn
    Sleuth (there's a suprise)
    Almost an Angel
    Cool hand Luke
    Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
    The Sting
    Bat*21

For some obscure reason all these films are next to impossible to obtain, the first three for sure. Oh and I missed out Robert Michum in Yakuza

Why didn't you get SLEUTH when it was available? It was in the shops for years before we had to delete it due to the rights expiring.

These are easily available on DVD from the USA (Don't tell me you can't play Region 1!):

    Bat*21
    The Sting
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
    Cool hand Luke

Re: List of films I can't get :(

I have only recently been able to use on-line shopping and have only had a DVD player for a matter of a year or so now, so my collection is in its infancy. Before, I was, lets just say, severely financially embarrassed. Now, slowly but surely I am developing a collection, and at the same time remembering films that impressed me in the early days.

One of the reasons I am only now looking for Sleuth, is that for years I had no idea what it was called, but eventually found someone who knew the film and identified it for me.

I have a vhs version of Almost an angel, (thanks for the offer SicCoyote) which I have managed to tx to disc, but the quality is poor. That is the case of several films I have copied across in that way.

Most of my films come from the high street (Virgin mainly) so it is from there I base my "unavailable" description. still... I learn!

I'm sure I've seen 'The Sting' in HMV Maurice, and 'Cool Hand Luke' is due in R2 in Feburary.

Yep, and I second that. I can't see Warner waiting much longer with Yakuza. I believe they consider it to be one of their more respected catalogue titles - after all, it was part of their Elite Collection on VHS.

The R2 release of The Sting looks to be a straight import from the R1 Legacy Series collection.
If it is I can highly recommend it. I got the R1 when it came out, it looks superb and the restored soundtrack is absolutely amazing.

They should be more concerned with releasing the Ken Russell masterpiece The Devils on a Region 2 special edition!! Either that, or they should just give up the rights to a company who are actually interested in doing justice to it.

The Devils is a bit of an isolated case. Due to the fact that the film had a rather ominous history of censorship, Warner, Ken Russell and Mark Kermode have taken the time to construct a definitive, longer print of the film.

The new version had been completed and from what I've heard, Russell and Kermode have recorded a commentary, so I'm very confident that it will be released in 2006

It is something of an enigma as to why Almost An Angel is still MIA as far as DVD is concerned.

Granted, it was loathed by the critics upon it's release - speaking as die-hard Hoges fans, we thought it was a little duff - but there are quite a number of people who have fond memories of the movie, and would certainly put their hands in their pockets for it.

If anything, the scene where Hoges covertly teaches a kid how to fight dirty is pretty funny "when you hit somebody, keep your elbow up, because if you miss him with your fist, you can get him with your elbow"

Still, you have to hand it to Hoges for coaxing Charlton Heston out of semi-retirement to play God - easy method acting for Chuck, granted...
