    Horror games for PC

Would it be horrendously off topic to ask if anybody has any recommends for decent horror based games for PC?
Recently a friend of mine loaned me a copy of Spiderman 2 when I got my new PC and was surprisingly hooked, being a non gamey person. Anyway last week another friend of mine showed me a trailer for a game called Silent Hill 4: The Room and it looks really atmospheric and a bit spooky.
Do these games actually deliver in the scare department? What are everyones favs? Or am I just gonna get flamed for not posting directly about movies?
    Cheers...

I think they can definitely work in the scare department if you can immerse yourself, which seems to be easier than when watching a film. In the past I've been in a state of near panic playing some games (usually FPS), although I'm not a big gamer generally so I can't comment on the current crop.

I am in a moaning mood

I like horror and games,so you would think I would like horror games.
Why do alot of these employ some of the dumbest controls ever.?
Resident Evil being the major culprit.
Code Veonica on the dreamcast is good but ruined by an inept control method.
Why can't we have normal controls i.e push Joystick forward character moves forward etc.
I was tempted to buy Silent Hill 4 from HMV for a tenner but I struggled to get into previous incarnations on the consoles as the puzzles are too cryptic.
Do they make the puzzles hard and the controls b*llocks to kid us into thinking the games are a big challenge.
Horror games I have enjoyed are Project Zero on the PS2
House of the dead 2 with gun,Dreamcast
    Moonwalker,arcade and megadrive.
    Splatterhouse arcade and megadrive
    Zombies ate my neighbours SNES
    Castlevania,Symphony of Night Psone
All the others are too much of an hassle.
Although I bought the Thing in the 3 for a tenner section but I haven't got round to playing it.It's supposed to be okay.

I'm not sure about the specifics of which machines you were using for which games but generally I use a PC with FPS games, no controller or joystick, and I seem to manage quite nicely with just a keyboard.

Well with Spiderman 2 on PC you use keys and mouse combo and it is real simple, but I bought Resident Evil 2 for PC and that is fully keys and a nightmare to navigate. Definately a joypad only game that one methinks.

So has anyone got any good horror game recommends for PC then?
Is Silent Hill 4 any good?

BUY a game cube for the new resident evil game BEST horror game EVER...No zombies this time only demented villagers that attack you with chainsaws and pitchforks. Or wait for it to hit ps2 this autumn!

THE SUFFERING on ps2 was also quite atmopsheric. Very dark and eerie...bit of a bugger to control though.

speaking of games/movies has anyone seen HOUSE OF THE DEAD the movie?

    Hola, mi amigo.

If you want some decent horrific PC games then steer yourself towards Doom III or The Suffering. Later this year sees the release of F.E.A.R. which promises to be a nasty little FPS, complete with mashed bodies everywhere and a scary little kid who makes people explode!

On the other hand, have a go at Half Life 2 or Far Cry if you really want to try out the best. HL2 is probably the more horrific, especially when you get to Ravenholme!

For something absolutely terrifying, try Playboy: The Mansion!

Heard good things about Half Life 2 and Doom 3, but aint heard of the Suffering. Have you played Silent Hill 4 mate... whats the crack?

I'll keep my eyes peeled for F.E.A.R.

I have both Half Life and Doom 3.Half life is a pain to install with all the regestration messing about but its decent.
Doom 3 I cannot get to run properly as it randomly crashes.Maybe I need more than 512 memory or to turn the graphics down.
My computer is well in excess of the minimum

Well in excess of the minimum won't get you maximum
I have an AMD 3200+ CPU, 512mb ram and a 6600GT nvidia gfx card
and I can run it almost at top spec.
    (Doom 3 that is)

There's also Night Trap I just found a version made for the pc, but I got bored quite fast.

I really like Splatterhouse 2 and complete it every so often in a religious type way.

There's S.T.A.L.K.E.R. shadow of chernobyl coming out sometime this year which has mutated people and animals, and you have to survive them. (killer sheep)

I have a AMD 3200+ also with a Radion 256k 9800 pro card and it randomly crashes,Doom that is.Sometimes 20 mins in once after the intro sequence.
Badly tested game methinks,as no other game that works crashes.

Far Cry is just brilliant, ain't it. Freeform action and an enemy that doesn't sit on its arse! Half Life 2, as mentioned, is a pain to install as it has to be registered on the Internet and then decrypted, which takes over 30 minutes! But, it's worth it, I can tell you! Doom III I didn't bother to buy in the end because it's just one great big spooky graphics demo

Silent Hill 4 will send you to sleep, mate, I guarantee it. Apparently it doesn't differ much from the previous snorefest, which didn't differ much from the one before that, etc. Oh, and it's a bastard to control as well! Save your pennies and buy something decent.

Have you updated your graphic card drivers? Other than that, Doom III was developed for nVidia cards, so I'm not sure how a Raddy can handle it. I've got a Raddy X600 Pro PCI-E, and that can run anything I throw at it. Saying that, I do have a P4 3.4GHz CPU and 1Gb of memory!

My all-time personal favourite video game is Silent Hill 2. It's got an immersive and twisted storyline. It's not as scary as the original Silent Hill (that school nearly had me in tears!), but I just think it's an all-round better game. I was a little disappointed with 3, not yet played 4.

Doom 3 was one of the best-looking games I've ever seen, but got very boring after a while.

I am not a computer anorak, but I thought ATI made Radion cards,or do different chip set makers made cards.I am sure my card is an Ati Radion 9800 Pro,I will have to look at my specification.

Don't worry, christats, ATI do make the Radion cards. nVidia make those crappy GeForce cards that have always given me no end of trouble!

I picked NVidia, and I've had little trouble.
