    Russ Meyer: King of Sexploitation

Five are showing Russ Meyer: King Of Sexploitation tonight at 11.05. Haven't a clue what it will be like but it's got to be worth watching or taping....

Yes, I'm watching that one too. I wonder how it will compare to the Incredibly Strange Film Show programme?

Just watched the Russ Meyer doc on Channel 5.

    Excellent.

I now feel the need to buy all Russ's films that are currently available on DVD. Those Japanese DVD boxsets are so, SO tempting.

Nice one Marc, I was a whisker away from ordering the boxsets from Japan.

When are the Arrow DVD's due out?

The Channel 5 Doc was really good, BTW, Tura Satana has put on a few pounds! Kitten doesn't look too bad though and it was great to see these ladies talking about the time they spent with Russ. Hugh Hefner is one of the luckiest men on the planet, that's a fact.

I dare say that by the time you're that age you'd have put on some weight too!

The Arrow Meyer discs are due early 2005.

I dare say you're right amigo!! She came across as a feisty old bird and I was really pleased to see that she embraced her cult following.

Can't wait for those Arrow discs in 2005!

As usual with these programme alerts, I missed it. Now...did anyone tape it?

Did anyone notice that the narrator was Zoë Ball?

    Be afraid, be very afraid...

It was heartbreaking to hear Kitten say that Russ forgot who she was in his last days.

Apart from BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, all the clips were in very bady shape. I hope these washed out prints are not an indication of the state of decay the original negatives are in...

Just in case anyone didn't read my previous reply on a digfferent thread, I wrote to Arrow and they told me they would be releasing the films in packs of three to begin with and that they are taken from the American masters. They are currently scouring the planet for extra material to include with the discs, as they said they wanted to release the best versions possible.

    Can't bloody wait!

I thought the programme was OK, but seemed sloppily researched at times - e.g the opening clip from Up! was labelled as from Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens and dated 1975! Also I didn't think it really put Meyer's career in it's proper context, missing whole chunks out of his career and jumping around all over the place. Too many talking heads who didn't have anything to do with Meyer as well, but it was nice to see the likes of Satana, Kitten, Hefner, John Landis and even Stu Phillips involved.

Kitten looked well despite her health problems in recent years. Yes, Tura has put some weight on, but then so has Steve Jones (who'd have thought the Sex Pistol would end up as a radio presenter in the States) Zoe Ball gives good narration, it's a fact! The clips were in bad shape, but then some (like the Mr. Teas ones) seemed to have been taken from VHS. Still, at least Five made the effort.

Oh, and how does Marilyn Manson get a gorgeous girlfriend like Dita Von Teese

Doesn't every high priest of the Church of Satan get a gorgeous babe as part of the package? Or, is it the money?

There were some errors in their as well. They said Meyer only got one chance directing a film for Fox. He actually did TWO. Beyond the Valley of the Dolls - and The Seven Minutes. There was no mention of anything they couldn't get clips of, basically. No menion of his first movie, French Peep Show, nor his German lensed Fanny Hill. Or even Blacksnake!

Still, it was only a TV hour, but I do think they could have done with less of those talking heads to be honest, some of whom really didn't have much to say.

Most clips looked like they were from video or DVD. These movies are in desperate need of re-masteing from the original film elements.

For those interested, here's details of the Japanese DVD releases. Mind you, they use the same old masters as the US discs, and will most likely be optically censored.

Those boxes do look nice, what with the postcards 'n' other gubbins! I wonder if we'll get that sort of stuff here?

Damn, I missed this! Sounds like it was more than the just a jokey, dim-witted "look at the gazongas on that"-type affair. What was Steve Jones' input like? Is he a genuine fan or was he just recalling Meyer's ill-fated time on the Swindle project?
