    Blockbuster 'Trade Station'

Just got back from my local Blockbuster, where they have started up a 'Trade Station' for people to bring in their old DVD's, videos & games. They then sell these really cheap as 'buy 1 get 1 free' - as a result I just picked up the following VHS titles for around 1-2 pound each:

Hardware, The Violent Breed, V, Lifespan, House 2 & Moon In Scorpio,

That's 6 titles (a couple of them fairly rare) for less than 8 quid - not much more than what it'd cost to rent two new titles from the same shop!! Particularly pleased to be picking up the old Vestron 'Lifespan' release with Klaus Kinski on the cover... Glad to see Blockbuster might finally be of SOME use...

It just so happens I was in Blockbuster yesterday - got Almost Famous (short version) and American Psycho 2 on DVD for 2.99 each. Also got Universal Soldier The Return, The Destroyers (with Katt Shea), Traces of Red and an old tape of Terminal Choice in the Buy 1 Get 1 Free section (99p each so that worked out at 4 tapes for 1.98). Not bad going. They also had a tape of The Ghoul (74) which wasn't priced up but I was already spent out so left it as I've got it taped off TV.

Guess it might be worth popping in there more often.

Stopped at another Blockbuster on the way back from bingo ( ) and found tapes of Cop Killers (from the makers of Flesh Gordon) and a still sealed Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Buy 1 get 1 Free for 2.99, also Michael Jackson's Thriller and And Now For Something Completely Different for 99p Buy 1 Get 1 Free....

I took seven old crappy videos up there yesterday - I got offered £3.20 for cash or £6.40 for store credit (just under a quid a video)... not a great price, but most of the titles I got rid of were beyond sh*te (Witchouse 1 & 2, Trancers 2, Arcade - rubbish like that) and I'd have been lucky to get 50p a title for them if I sold them on ebay, so I took the credit and picked up 'Tommy - The Collector's Edition' for £10.99. Minus my store credit that came to £4.59 cash for a two disc set. Which'll do me nicely!!

    WOAH That's MY Blockbuster too!!

I took 25 videos to them, some quite rare and including an entire season boxset of Buffy, all pretty much mint condition and they offered me 6 quid for cash or 12 for store credit.

Is it just me, or is that slightly unreasonable, considering they sell some of these tapes for over 10 quid?

On the plus side, I picked up ET and Nightmare Before Christmas, brand new in widescreen on VHS for my little sisters (they can watch the DVDs in my room )

There's no way i'd sell VHS tapes to Blockbuster because they don't pay enough cash for them.

Has anyone noticed how they have a funny pricing system and charge a lot of money for some titles for no apparant reason.

I saw VHS copies of "Fortress" (Christopher Lambert) in 2 different stores for £10.

Did someone who works there hear that it was a rare tape or something?

If they think that then maybe they should visit a few car boot sales and snag all the copies that turn up at nearly every one of these things (it's almost as common as Robocop and the "Callisthetics" workout tape), they'd make a fortune!

The great thing about it is that there is a Blockbuster in nearly every town in the country so it's really good for driving around on tape hunts.

As you all know, I have no time for VHS releases. I'd not give you anything for them. But..... at the price offered here, I am glad you kept them. Surely the MOVIES are worth more than that. Since you already own them, kudos to you for doing the right thing.

Of course, this is all indicative of the fact that VHS is practically worthless and that the demand is low. For every rare tape there are literally thousands of tapes worth next to nothing.

    Oh well, such is progress.

That's why I'm using the service to:

    a) get rid of some of my crappy VHS tapes that ain't worth sh*t, and
    b) pick up videos that ain't out on DVD yet

    - that way you can't lose, I reckon...

It's not rare, but it is at least uncut.

Columbia unfortunately have a habit of releasing previously uncut 18 cert films in cut R-rated versions on DVD, and like Candyman, Fortress is one of them.

I've never understood why Blockbuster still try to sell off ex-rental DVDs (often without extra features) for 9.99 when you can get them brand new in the shops with extra features for less than that.

BB's pricing of the traded-in tapes is bizarre. I buy to sell on eBay and have picked up some great bits at 99p (with a two for the price of one option on top) and £1.99.

Where things begin to get strange a worthless film that's say, 6 or seven years old and no use to anyone, is priced at £9.99.

I brought up the issue of pricing with one of the members of staff and they informed me that the prices come from their head office and the more expensive titles were so because they are deemed 'collectible' or 'rare.'

I'd like to add, if I smoked as much crack as the person pricing the trade-ins, I would be dead...

Yesterday I took about 50 or so of my old videos to my local Blockbuster. I was offered £16 cash or £32 credit, needless to say I took the credit and bought some ex-rentals.

I was looking at the receipt which details the price given for each title and noticed that I was given £7 for an old Jackie Chan video of ARMOUR OF GOD and £3 for AMERICAN GLADIATORS (have no idea where I got that one from) but the rest were between 20 and 50 pence. So if you have 10 copies of ARMOUR OF GOD, FORTRESS or CRITTERS you stand a chance of making some money.

All Blockbuster's are at the moment Zanner, some good bargains to be had and they come with a years guarantee.

    I got:

    TOUCHING THE VOID
    EMMETT'S MARK
    MONSTER
    SPUN
I CAPTURE THE CASTLE (for the lady)

All discs are hardly scratched and play fine!

TOUCHING THE VOID was incredible, an excellent film.
