    Edgar G. Ulmer - recommendations?

I've been thinking for a long time to dive into the world of Edgar G. Ulmer. I love Hannibal, even if it's a pretty standard historical epic, and I think Strange Illusion is great. But that's about it. What shall I see and is there any good DVD releases you recommend?

OK, first and foremost, you need to pick up THE BELA LUGOSI COLLECTION (R1 Universal). It's got THE BLACK CAT from '34 which is totally amazing. Set includes 4 more Lugosi/Karloff flicks too. Absolutely essential, and buy or die and all that good stuff.

The R1 MGM Midnight Movies disc of THE MAN FROM PLANET X is also recommended. Some great low budget (what else?) sci-fi.

THE AMAZING TRANSPARENT MAN is on a ROAN disc paired with INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN. It has a pretty nice widescreen print of TATM.

The IMAGE (R1) disc of the noir DETOUR is excellent, as is the movie.

You'll also want to pick up the EDGAR G. ULMER ARCHIVE from IMAGE (R1) for THE DAUGHTER OF DR. JEKYLL (*). There is more classic stuff on the set (including BLUEBEARD) but there are some quality issues (some soft looking transfers, and a bit missing from BLUEBEARD. If you can deal with muffled audio and want a more complete version of BLUEBEARD go for the BLACK & BLUE COLLECTION from ROAN. Otherwise this set should do you fine. http://monsterkidclassichorrorforum....6#.T7ATUfXEHZ4)

    That should keep you busy.

    * John Agar fans should note that for some odd reason John is decked out like rockabilly madman Benny Joy in this one.

You'll be happy to know that I've re-watched a bunch of Ulmer since you brought this up. Got to say I had the most fun with THE DAUGHTER OF DR. JEKYLL. Some atmosphere, some schlock and some John Agar. After checking your blog I realized that I keep forgetting to check out JOURNEY BENEATH THE DESERT. Must rectify this.

You can find a lot of his flicks on YOUTUBE, too. Entire movies. MINSTREL MAN is at the top of my must watch list now.
