IMDB usually has a poster for each film, you're probably aware of this.
Also-
Bruce Hershensen books, click on his name and it brings up a number of his books on movie posters. How about this as a way in, it's somewhere to begin at least :-

Anything that shows a studio shot background, no doubt done by the distributors to promote the tape.
I remember this type of ad being very popular in the 80s and might well be found within the pages of Video World magazine for example (if only I had back issues to look through), plus hanging in local video rental shops.
This is the kind of thing I'm after (I couldn't attach it to my first post for some reason).
Oh yes, I know the sort of poster you mean, my quick scout didn't throw up any 80s posters such as that per se. You'd think a guide would pop up somewhere, but it's finding it....
