UK: Cannibal Holocaust comes to DVD & Blu-ray via Shameless

On 26 September 2011 Shameless will issue Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust on DVD and Blue ray in a newly approved director's edit.

Cannibal Holocaust is extremely well executed and is a powerful and thought-provoking as well as provocative piece of filmmaking, finally reassessed in this Shameless edition and given the fitting Ultimate Cult Film accolade it deserves...
A crew of four documentary filmmakers disappears while filming primitive cannibal tribes deep in the Amazonian rain forest; the horrific footage they shot is then found by a second expedition who will discover the horrific real reason for the demise of the four filmmakers...

    Special Features
    - Original long version of the film (only 14 secs cut which has been seamlessly replaced by reaction shots)
    - The director's own edit of the film reducing the on-screen violence to animals whilst preserving the jaw-dropping, gut-wrenching impact of the film
    - Introduction to the film by director Ruggero Deodato
    - Ruggero Deodato on the Animal Edit
    - Interview of Ruggero Deodato & Karl York & Francesca Cirdi
    - Specially commissioned documentary by Cine Excess and critical analysis featuring critics such as Kim Newman etc.
    - Easter Egg & Shameless Trailer Park

From today's The Guardian: Cannibal Holocaust: 'Keep filming! Kill more people!'

So, did Ruggero do this because he felt the animal stuff was mostly unnessassary or because he felt it was hindering the sales of the film? Doesn't take away the fact that real animals were used though. (I'll take my combat gear off now )

The former, I'm led to believe. Apparently, it was a 'mondo'-esque requirement imposed by the producer(s). He says that he regrets having done it.

Certainly, Salo manages to be an arguably more rigorous and powerful film without such 'effects'.

Noticeable difference in the Shameless version compared to the Grindhouse but not much difference in the Shameless Blu compared to the Shameless DVD.Good job none the less. Can't wait to watch this in 5.1

I think the only 5.1 mix is for the Italian track on the Italian disc (DVDcompare says it is a remix, not an upmix).

Nice review shame it is still cut, TBH the razor scene was always going to run into problems in this country, however i think it is great that shameless are committed to putting out these once taboo titles, the shriek show release is still possibly the way to go with this film & easily the most accessible
