This looks and sounds fantastic. This had completely passed me by up until now, so thanks for waking me up to it Marc. Hope it finds a release somewhere ...!

Hmm, i think i'll definately be checking this one out.
It does look strong from the trailer and we all know its easy to just be hyper nasty in a film but if it's got some thought/ideas then it'll be a pleasent surprise from the usual torture porn/what passes for 'extreme' these days.
    any release spec's?

Twitch: A Serbian Film claims a victim
Cult sensation A Serbian Film has found a distributor here in Cannes. While I'm still looking for specific details, I'm told that at this morning's screening in the Cannes market, one distributor was so disturbed by what they saw on screen that they tried to leave, becoming faint and disoriented on the way out before collapsing at the exit and falling face first into the door, breaking their nose and leaving a puddle of blood on the floor.

Re: A Serbian Film / Srpski film (Srdjan Spasojevic, 2009)

Hello all. I've been away for six weeks, first to South Africa, then to Canada, where my visit coincided with the Fantasia Film Festival.

One of the films I saw there was this one. I dont know if many have been following the reviews over the last few months - I paid a small amount of attention to it, but not a great deal as it wasnt something I was planning on making much of an effort to see. As a result, I only know bits and pieces, and so the end result was quite surprising.

First off, I was expecting a grainy, cheap looking kind of film, something along the lines of an August Underground or a Murder Set Pieces, and thats not the case at all. A Serbian Film is extremely slick and well made. The acting, as much as I could tell, was great, particularly the lead who did a good job of portraying a guy trapped by ever increasing circumstance. The first 40 minute or so will lull you into a false sense of security of sorts - its very storyline heavy, lots of dialogue, and not much to hint at whats to come. When it does kick itself into high gear at around the halfway point, it sets off on an ever decreasing spiral of depravity, perversion and misery. This isnt a nice film at all. I'm reluctant to describe what exactly happens (and admittedly, some of it is implied rather than seen, but that doesnt make it any the less nasty) as that might spoil the 'surprises' but suffice to say, its not one to watch with the wife and kids.

The revelation of one characters involvement in proceedings is telegraphed a little, but thats a minor complaint. The closing scene is a real kick in the nuts too - just when I thought things couldnt get any more miserable and depressing, the last line of dialogue made me close my eyes and shake my head a little.

I dont think theres any real doubt that its the intention of A Serbian Film to shock and disturb, and it does so in a style of sorts. It isnt entertainment, and eventually, The Daily Mail will get hold of it and villify it. It is horrible, its almost suicidally depressing and in no way uplifting. It is everything boundary pushing extremity should be and it will attract as much controversy as it deserves. Amidst the inevitable controversy though, there are things to admire that the sensationalists will doubtless ignore.

The director claims its a lot of things - from an allegory about the Bosnian war to a character study of what its like to live as an average Serbian in the modern society. Ultimately, its up to you to decide whether its director exerting his will to challenge and defy the rules, even of extreme cinema, or just a carefully planned piece of sensationalism.

I'll dance naked in Burtons window if this emerges unscathed from the censors scissors. I wonder if it'll even be certified at all.

Incidentally, theres another Serbian film out there, called the Life And Death Of A Porno Gang, and that was another treat from my week at Fantasia. Its just as grim, if not even more so, than this.

Great write-up, Andy. I watched the film last week and agree with most of what you've said.

I did, however, find the film quite amusing. Don't get me wrong, it's very well made and almost suicidally offensive (I predict mass walk-outs at the 59-minute mark). But it was so over-the-top, and got so silly in its endeavours to push the envelope, that I found it increasingly difficult to take seriously.

Anyway, it's interesting that you've seen "Life And Death Of A Porno Gang". I haven't, but I understand that's the more interesting of the two - and has been acquired by Synapse for a DVD release in early 2011.

Oh absolutely, theres definitely humour in it if you reflect on it, and the scene when he's by the phonebox in the alley made me smile too.

Porno Gang is just as depressing really, its similar in some ways - a guy wants to be a film maker, so he gets into porn, and then that leads to snuff. They're nasty to animals in it too. Its a laugh a minute.

Sometimes you get more than you bargained for, and this is one of those times. You go looking for the most extreme films and then you get Deodatoed. Heavy, heavy duty stuff. I did see a very slight touch of humour ('my film's just jumped out the window..!') and in the way it gets worse and worse and then....even more depravity. I guess you could say it's funny in hindsight, but at the time I did just feel pretty depressed, it's got to be said. That's quite an achievement in itself though.
The intense, unrelenting score adds to it all. Great music actually.
Think Irreversible and Cannibal Holocaust. I felt the same way at the end of all three; a bit like I'd been to 'Nam!

Didn't you think the lead actor started to look more and more like David Spade (Just Shoot Me) as the fuck-dope set in?

Not sure whether it's even been sold for DVD yet mate.

On a separate note, review now online at www.sexgoremutants.co.uk (tab down on the homepage to the Frightfest preview).
