UK: Avatar DVD and Blu-ray in April

On 26 April 2010 James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar will be issued on DVD and Blu-ray.

Promising revolutionary digital effects and an epic storyline, the hugely anticipated Avatar sees the director of Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, James Cameron, returns to breathe new life into the sci-fi genre.

Winner of the BAFTA Awards for Best Production Design and Special Visual Effects.

Featuring Terminator Salvation's Sam Worthington, Star Trek's Zoe Saldana and James Cameron's Aliens star, Sigourney Weaver, Avatar tells of a future conflict between resource-guzzling humans and the indigenous inhabitants of the planet Pandora: the Na'vi. Humans can't breathe Pandoran air, so paraplegic marine Jake volunteers to become an Avatar: a genetically engineered half human/half Na'vi controlled via a mental link. Sent to scout out the `enemy`, Jake falls for the Na'vi princess, Neytir, forcing him to choose sides when the conflict escalates into full-blown war.

Am I right in thinking this is even bigger than that other cult film, Mamma Mia?

I hear this initial release will be rather vanilla, with further extras-packed releases later in the year.

I really can't see any serious film collector's buying this release. The days of me double-dipping just to have something—that I probably wouldn't watch again in a hurry—just for an interim period before the "bells and whistles" edition are well and truly over.

I will also say that this release stinks of Fox/Lightstorm rushing it out now that ALICE IN WONDERLAND has stolen AVATAR's theatrical release thunder.

You're right, I won't be buying it, "limited edition" packaging (which is probably a million copies) or otherwise. Will wait for the 3d version.

I have still yet to see 3D on a conventional Blu-ray, so I can't comment but I would be happy to buy an extras-laden 2D version of the film until 3D TV tech has been introduced and is at an affordable price.

Ah! Very nice, but now I'm confused because I thought it was the television tech that needed to be introduced in order for us to see decent quality 3D in the home.

Yes, you will also need a 3D TV.

Cheers, thanks for clearing that up, Marc - I imagine that 3D televisions will be astronomically priced at the point of release and they won't get to an affordable level for a good few years. If you cast your mind back two or three years, full HD tellies were more than twice the price of what they are now. Same goes for the regular, non-HD Plasmas and LCDs a few years before that.

A release of this with an extended love scene (not shown in cinemas) according to Mr Cameron, not sure if this will be the version though.

A Director's Cut will of course be released.

If there is a Directors Cut, hopefully it will be vastly different. The current version does not stand up well to a second viewing. The film does work in 2D.

Don't want to be a critic of a film that I haven't bothered watching yet,but surely the DVD/Blu release is pointless.
A fancy bunch of computer CGI.

Its after all about the 3D experience. So until it dosn't cost a kidney to buy a 3D Tv then why.?

The 3D blu player isn't the problem as the PS3 will be getting an update.?

(Alice in Wondeland, maybe. As its a version of a classic.Be it a turgid one according to some.)

If that's the criteria for not wanting to see a film then by that reasoning you'll not have seen any of the PIXAR films and pretty much every big budget action/science fiction film made in the last 15 years....

To be honest I haven't seen many big budget sci Fi and Pixar films.I like grime from the 70's.

So you're saying AVATAR hasn't got a plot but yet you haven't seen it?

I love how it's coming to DVD when it's still in the cinema
