I like Severin, but they have been releasing quite a bit of uninteresting shit lately. Pass.

That looks like a bunch of bullshit (the movie itself, not it's existence or whatever Severin are going to do with it), but I'm not lying when I say I'd go see it if it came to a theater within 20 miles of me.

Severin Films Acquires All Rights To "BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR"

SEVERIN FILMS ACQUIRES ALL RIGHTS TO BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR

James Nguyens Romantic Thriller Triggered Outrage, Controversy During Sundance Film Festival Festival

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 1, 2010 Severin Films (severin-films.com/) today announced the acquisition of all worldwide rights to BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (www.birdemic.com), the new feature from writer/producer/director James Nguyen. Described by Nguyen as a romantic thriller, the film is a horror/action/special-effects-driven love story about a young couple trapped in a small Northern California town under siege by homicidal birds. BIRDEMIC also tackles topical issues of global warming, avian flu, world peace, organic living, sexual promiscuity and lavatory access. An EPK for BIRDEMIC can be viewed at vimeo.com/9082600.

Nguyen, a 42-year-old Vietnamese refugee, wrote, cast and shot the film over the course of four years using salary from his day job as a mid-level software salesman in Silicon Valley. The film pays homage to Hitchcocks THE BIRDS via location shooting in Mission Bay, California, as well as an appearance by star of THE BIRDS Tippi Hedren (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippi_Hedren). When rejected for an official screening slot at Sundance, Nguyen spent eight days driving up and down the festivals nearby streets in a van covered with fake birds, frozen blood and BIRDEMIC posters, while loudspeakers blared the sounds of eagle attacks and human screams. The tactic caught the attention of festival organizers, filmgoers and local police, as well as executives from Severin Films.

BIRDEMIC is truly unlike any other film weve ever seen, said Carl Daft, CEO and co-founder of Severin Films. The fact that James Nguyen wrote, produced, directed, financed and self-marketed such a unique feature is in itself a story worth celebrating. On a certain level, this is a landmark independent production and James is truly an auteur for our time. Were enormously excited for audiences to experience BIRDEMIC for themselves.

Severin Films is planning a limited theatrical release for BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR later this year. The film is the companys first contemporary acquisition.

Unfortunately I do have to agree with these sentiment's up to a point, although I wouldn't have put it quite so bluntly myself.

Birdemic looks a bit pants to me, but each to their own.

What I really want to know is what was happened to their proposed release of Expose?

They're certainly pushing it on their website which I just checked out for the first time in ages....and I will still never watch it. I also noticed they are releasing something called 'Dogora' next.

Didn't Severin used to release good/interesting films like 'Malabimba', 'Cannibal Terror', 'Bloody Moon' etc? What's going on? They were my favourite company a while back.

They must be spending a fortune promoting this junk. If they promise to put all the profits into new Jess Franco DVDs I hope it's bigger than Avatar.

And please, writers/reviewers/Tom/Dick/Harry stop with the Plan 9 comparisons. Short of any prior/later Wood work or Manos: The Hands of Fate nothing even comes close.

How much would it cost to market this $10,000 epic, and get it onto 400 screens nationwide.

Could this be the next 'Trees'?

I'm sure they're gonna make a good profit on this movie, just because of the hype - which I'm sure is something they planned. It's good for such a great dvd company to get some more cash, so I think this is brilliant
