This was great fun - took a while to get into, but I enjoyed it once I got a feel for the characters.

We have some posted in the phone boxes here. Big eye-catching ads that fill up the doors. A great piece of old-fashioned publicity ballyhoo and a real attention-grabber.

Nigeria's government is asking cinemas to stop showing a science fiction film, District Nine, that it says denigrates the country's image.

It's not a country with much of an image to denigrate, though, is it?

British people have been used to the Americans using us as villains for years.

Saw D9 on pay-per-view over the weekend and couldn't believe how deeply stupid so much of it was, despite the odd engaging scene. Is this really what passes for intelligent sci-fi these days? Can't believe so many people have been ballyhoo-ing this one. Am I alone here? Hmmmm?

    Ahhh, IMDb users - aren't they the same people who rated FORREST GUMP the 37th best film of all time? Gotta love 'em... ;

It's also telling that 15 out of the Top 30 films according to IMDb users are no more than 20 years old...

Yep, I know that D9 got great reviews and was nominated for Oscar-type stuff. I just can't for the life of me see why.

Re: District 9 (Neill Blomkamp, 2009)

I thought it was a once or twice amusing comedy film until I found out it was intended to be a serious sci fi thriller. I don't understand the popularity--but then I am old enough to remember Enemy Mine and Alien Nation and Outer Limits-and Rod Serling, and since it came out the same summer as Transformers 2, perhaps benefited from "any port in the storm."
But how it got a best adapted screenplay nomination for what was clearly a not well thought out improvised script....

I can see why Nigeria would be upset given that it implied Nigerians were not only eating the aliens but having sexual relations with them.

Yes supposedly, but not until after an unrelated movie Elysium comes out.

I hope they find the cash for a screenwriter and a tripod this time around.

The only one I have seen is a weird viral ad about the benefits of having a career working for some corporation on a far off space colony. It doesnt reveal anything about the story at all. It came out a few months ago. There's a bit more information on its wikipedia page.

I followed the hype and when I saw it was disappointed.

I like unusual SF, even a low budget SF is fine, but this just didn't resonate with me.

There's a quite a lot of hype now, coming from quarters such as indie films, that previously you could rely on to be a flag for something less mainstream, or interesting, but I find you can't trust any hype from any direction nowadays. The movie frequently disappoints.

I've got it on DVD but I haven't got around to watching it yet. I've heard various things about the film and it sounds like a Marmite one.

You know Terror, it may have been a solid film -- it has been a while since I saw it - but hype put me off, or because I thought it was going to be along the lines of a Battlefield L.A. type story-- which I haven't seen yet, but look forward to watching, unless the 'hype' has suckered me in once again.
