Over the last few weeks I've been hoovering up cheap second hand DVD's from the CEX website. While you certainly can get some bargains, unfortunately the standard of service thus far has left much to be desired.
The copy of King Frat which I ordered over a fortnight ago has not turned up and trying to extract any info on its whereabouts is like trying to squeeze blood from a stone. Several other discs I ordered took almost a fortnight to turn up aswell. I ordered Long Weekend from them and even though the product description was for the Aussie horror film I was sent a completely different film called The Long Weekend which looks like some sort of naff teen comedy. Then just this morning my copy of The Big Bird Cage arrived in the post. I could barely believe my eyes as the case was smashed as flat as a pancake, as if someone had literally stamped on it, and the DVD itself was rattling around loose inside, although miracilously it is unscratched. The fact the jiffy bag it came in is spotless and imnmaculate leads me to suspect the DVD was probably already in this state when it was mailed to me.
Now I know these DVD's are only costing me £1 - £2 each, but that's no excuse for such dire service really.
Has anyone else had similar bad experiences with ordering from their website?
I know of someone who ordered the Burning from their site that never turned up.
There are certainly some great bargains to be had so I'll persevere ordering from CEX for that reason alone. However, the fact that I've only ever placed three or four orders so far and I've already had one DVD not turn up, another arrive with its case literally smashed to smithereens and even been sent the wrong film in one instance hardly creates a particularly glowing impression.
Oh well, things can only get better I suppose!![]()
Well I've just ordered the Vipco HOUSE OF DOOM box for £14.00.I'll tell you what state it's in when it arrives,as I can imagine the box is flimsy cardboard.
Funnily enough I've actually been meaning to pick up that box-set for a while as the only one of the four films included that I already own at present is House Of Clocks (the US Shriek Show DVD). Based on your reminder I had a browse online and managed to get one listed as "like new" condiition off Amazon Marketplace for just £7.99.
I'm pretty sure this release is nothing more than the four single disc releases in their usual amaray cases housed in a slimsy cardboard cover. I'll probably just bin the card surround when mine arrives.
I like CEX, but they're pricing is sometimes a bit hit and miss. The fact that they change their prices constantly (and throughout the day) is frustrating. I like to have a good look around the DVD section, and on occasion have picked up a few covers, took them to the counter, only to be told that the price had gone up for certain movies (surely that's illegal?)
Having said that, i've also been informed that certain prices have gone down (mid purchase)
The really good thing about them is their website, which lets you know in advance how much they give for various titles. I've bought a stack load of HKL titles (such as Dragons Forever, etc) for a pound (in cash generators) only to given £8 cash (or £10 tade) from CEX (who are now selling it for £15....and it'll never sell) They give pretty good prices for certain cheapo pound shop titles as well.
Of recent they've been selling off loads of Sony/Fight Factory' titles (Seagal, Lundgren, Snipes, etc) for £1 a go (i now have most latter SEAGAL stv titles about four times each....sad i know)
As for buying off them online, i ordered HIGH ANXIETY and a week later the cover turned up (but with no disc) i complained, and they sent the disc out next day. I could have been lying about the disc, but i recieved an email saying that the disc was in the depo.
The only tip i'd give to anyone buying stuff from there, is to avoid boxsets, as they usually store all the dics in one plastic wallet, which usually results in hefty scratched discs.
Well my House Of Doom Collection box-set ordered from Amazon (as mentioned in my previous post) arrived this morning. Unfortunately instead of the actual proper set what I actually received was the later Vipco "Screamtime Collection" re-issues of all four films tied together with elastic bands. I'm half tempted to compain but as the only real difference is in the packaging I'm not going to bother.
Bloody Nora Jack, have you stepped under a ladder or something?
I'm always hearing loops go on about CEX but I can honestly say I've never stepped foot in one. Well I don't think so at least.
Where is the CEX store in Birmingham? DOn't recall seeing it anywhere.
Forest do you know where the old Virgin Megastore used to be on the corner, over the road from the Square Peg (Wetherspoons) pub? Well CEX is basically directly beneath the building that used to be Virgin. You just go down the small subway/underpass which is outside to get to it. There's even a helpful sign on the street level to indicate where it is. Dead easy!
Meanwhile the one in Wolverhampton (incase you were wondering) is located inside the Mander Centre shopping precint, directly next door to what used to be MVC/Music Zone but is now an everything for £1 type shop.
Hope that info helps.
To be honest the stuff I've seen in either shop has always been quite bland compared to the hidden gold I know some have come across in other CEX stores elsewhere in the UK, but it's still well worth popping in for a browse IMO.
bizarrely, I go past it all the time! It's by the computer game shop somewhere, then.
I'm in Brum next week, so I'll have a nose in.
Thanks very much.
Paid a visit to the Wolverhampton branch today for te first time in about a month. Pretty crap selection as usual, however I did pick up the Warner DVD of the 1953 House Of Wax starring Vincent Price for £2.
I've picked up quite a lot of stuff at CEX recently, including The Lamp on the Midnite Movies label - £3, Buddy Giovanazzo's No Way Home - 75p (ILC) and lots of Hong Kong Legends DVDs for £2-3 like Mr. Vampire and the Once Upon A Time In China trilogy for £6. Lots of Godfrey Ho too!
A new two floor branch of CEX has opened recently in Walsall and being bored and at a loose end yesterda afternoon I decided to bus it over in order to see if they had anything decent. To be honest depite its fairly large size the Walsall CEX is really pretty unimpressive, however I did pick up a few DVD's...
- She-Devil's On Wheels (Herschell Gordon Lewis) (Tartan) - £4
- Demonic Toys (Film 2000) - £2
- Carnival Of Souls (1962) (Stax) - 50p
- Boggy Creek II (Hollywood DVD) - 10p
Me and the other half were in Birmingham yesterday meeting up with friends, however I did find time to pay a quick visit to CEX.
To be honest it was a bit of a waste of time. Very little of any interest, however I did nab the Lionsgate UK DVD of Waxwork for £2.50 so not a complete wash out.
Hadn't seen anything of note in the Wood Green CEX for a while, but there were some fair bargains in there yesterday:
TO THE DEVIL... A DAUGHTER (Warners) - £1.50
THE HILLS HAVE EYES 2 (Original / Anchor Bay) - £2.00
FLESH GORDON 2 (EIV) - £2.50
THE EVIL (23rd Century) - £1.00
Additionally there were a couple I didn't pick up as funds were limited:
ANGELS' WILD WOMEN (Cinema Club) - £3.00
DEATH WARMED UP (23rd Century) - £1.00
Best, D.
Cex has been crap lately the only dvd i've bought in the last few weeks is Flesh Eater for £1.50.
