USA: Slaughter High coming from Lionsgate

On 14 April 2009 Lionsgate will be launching "The Lost Collection - The Best Movies You Totally Forgot About". Whilst most are rather forgettable, the one title that stands out for cult movie fans is the 1986 Dick Randall produced slasher "Slaughter High", with Caroline Munro.

Let's just hope we get the uncut version and not the "R" rated version.

This film has the weirdest of fans. I’ll never forget a few years ago, when I received loads of emails from a seriously unbalanced guy who seemed to be stalking the entire cast!!!

I'm also hoping for the unrated version but Lionsgate specs suggest another wasted opportunity:

The Lost Collection: The Best Movies You Totally Forgot About! Old is NEW with this Relevant, Fun, Youth-targeted Line-Look!

    Detailed Synopsis:
Eight different people are invited to their 10-year high school reunion at their now-closed down high school where a former student, disfigured from a prank gone wrong, is there to seek revenge.

    Cast: Caroline Munro, Simon Scuddamore
    Director: George Dugdale

    Key Selling Points:
    • "Pop-Up Trivia” track included on each DVD as a Special Feature!
    • DVD Premiere!

    Screen Format: Full Screen
    Language/Subtitles: English
    Audio: 2.0
    Rating: R
    Run Time: 90
    CC: No
    Color: Color

Incidentally the other films in the Lost Collection are:

    Hiding Out
    Homer & Eddie
    Irreconcilable Differences
    Morgan Stuart's Coming Home
    My Best Friend's A Vampire
    The Night Before
    Repossessed

I saw this for the first time around three years ago. Thought it was absolutely dreadful, to be honest.

It isn't a good film at all to be honest - but at least it's fun.

I thought it was hilarious. It's like a am-dram version of a slasher film. Those American accents are terrible.

I have the US video which I suspect is the R rated.
I'm sure it only runs 91 mins, but it seems to be "gory" enough.
I haven't seen the UK video or any other to compare it.

How long is it uncut,95 mins.?

If this is the best of a bad bunch in the range the others must be real turds.

I will buy it if its complete though.

The good news is that Lionsgate have now confirmed that Slaughter High will be released uncut and unrated.

The bad news is that it will probably be fullscreen, hopefully that means open matte and not cropped….

Regarding the 'R' rating.Bear in mind when a lot of these films were made. The uncut My Bloody Valentine is also an 'R' now as the likes of Rambo make these films look very tame now.

I doubt Lionsgate resubmitted the film to the MPAA to reconfirm the R rating. Unlike the UK, America’s censorship/classification rules allow a rated DVD to have unrated extras, so the deleted scenes probably fall into that category, even if they can be viewed reincorporated into the actual film.

Again, I'm not sure, but I think once a film has a rating it can be used in perpetuity, unlike with the BBFC's resubmission policy.

Having said that, plenty of uncut/unrated versions of films have been released with sleeves that proclaim an R rating so maybe that happened here too, I don’t think the MPAA get particularly bothered when that happens (though I recall they did make a fuss when the uncut I Spit On Your Grave was released as an R).

Its been confirmed on deadpit.com radio that the release is not only in fullscreen but is a video only transfer.
Turns out lionsgate could not find the original film print.Sadly leaving them with no choice but to opt for this unrated video transfer or nothing at all.

Intresting movie fact-the film was shot entirely in Britain.

It's got a bloke out of Emmerdale Farm in it, doing a comedy American accent.

Some of the fx are fun in an old school sort of way.

Most of Artisan/Lionsgate's DVD releases of Vestron/Lightning Video titles have been from antiquated video masters.

Lionsgate is really hit or miss with their transfers. They used the exact same old DVD transfers on recent DVD reissues of Freeway and The Boys From Brazil for example, and literally lie on the packaging for both stating that they are now 16x9 enhanced indicating new transfers. Nope, same non-anamorphic letterbox transfers from the DVD's from the 1990's.

Artisan pre-LionsGate did treat some Vestron-produced titles to new transfers like LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM and PAPERHOUSE.

As I said, hit or miss. I'm pretty sure they just recycled the transfer of Lair... from the older Pioneer Special Edition DVD though.

Going from the above then I suppose I'd be best holding onto my tape, it's hardly worth the 'upgrade' judging by that news. Disappointing.

Were you not aware of that before? It was done by American producer Dick Randall who did several other British/European horrors of the time like Girl In Room 2A, Pieces, Don't Open Till Xmas and The French Sex Murders etc.

10 out of 10 more like. Slaughter High rocks! I heard that there's a blink and you'll miss it difference between the cut and uncut versions so until it's given a proper release then I'm sticking with my VHS.
