Film Chair: 10 British films to look out for in 2009
I think I'll be actively avoiding most of those.
I'll be actively trying to see them!
I agree theres not much there that will have me going to the cinema/buying the DVD.
The Descent isnt a great film, but its ok and certainly doesnt need a sequel. Lesbian Vampire Killers has two of the most annoying 'celebrities' in recent times starring. I can have access to that idiot, Charles Bronson, at work if I want, so wont bother watching a film which glorifies his pointless life. I've never seen any of the Harry Potter films. Danny Dyer is in Doghouse, so I wont rush to see that either.
Of the rest of them, the only one which slightly interests me is Slumdog Millionaire, but I'll wait for the DVD before checking that out.
44 Inch Chest looks good but it ain't Glazer directing so the 'Sexy Beast' tag is a tiny bit misleading - apart from that I'm looking forward to Slumdog and that's about it...
I say ditch all those pre-conceived ideas you may have and approach each film with an open-mind.![]()
woohoo - got some free tickets to a preview of Slumdog on Sunday!
apart from the The Descent: Part 2 Ill try to watch those films, that is if i get time to go and see 'em.
mtj
really enjoyed Slumdog - i'll pop down some more detailed thoughts tomorrow when i have a bit more time
I shall definately be giving "Descent 2" a wide berth!
The first was just appauling!

I really liked The Descent - I think it's Neil Marshall's best film to date.
Well here's an excerpt of the review I posted on my website about my feelings on the film...
Having been impressed with Neil Marshall's previous film Dog Soldiers, I was looking forward to seeing this. Unfortunately, the end result proved to be something of a disappointment. After being subjected to about half an hour of embarrassingly "cringe worthy" girly talk, the film descends (no pun intended) into a complete rip-off of "Alien Terror", with the rock creatures replaced by the mutants from "Chud". Plus the whole thing just took way to long to get going, and the ending was a total downer.
Best Wishes

Although Dog Soldiers has its moments, I didn't enjoy it as much as The Descent I'm afaid to say.
I thought the mutants in The Descent reminded me more of the Morlocks from The Time Machine.
They were cavemen that remained in the caves and evolved into those human sub-species.
I'm intrigued with The Descent 2. Definitely want to see it, but a new director and the return of the previous cast for the sequel, it kind of puts a damper on the ending of it's predecessor. A bit worrying.

It looks like a "Shaun of the Dead" type thing, and as such I'll be giving it a go. Not expecting any scares though.
I loved The Descent, personally: I like the fact that it exploited the possibilities inherent in a caving situation for all it was worth, before really introducing the horror element with the cave-dwellers in the second half. I liked the way the story played out in terms of the characters, and thought the cinematography was fantastic as well - one of Marshall's strong points seems to be the visual aspect and that has to be a good thing for a British film maker! As for the sequel, I'm not too hopeful about it to be honest.
I'm really looking forward to Doghouse, though - I hope this is Jake Wests real breakthrough feature after being around so long without getting the mainstream success that Marshall or - in my opinion - the extremely over-rated Danny Boyle have enjoyed.
I like Danny Boyle, and think he's worth tuning in for. I too look forward to Doghouse.
The Descent was good for all the reasons you list - but it's weak when it comes to the cave dwellers - that idea is just too old, weak, and silly. And that's where the film fails, imo.
The trailer looks awful IMO. I also think that the Dr Terrible's House of Horrible episode "Lesbian Vampire Lovers of Lust" is enough of a homage/pastiche of Hammer lesbian vampire films to make this seem kind of irrelevant. It looks about as much fun as I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle.
