    Horror Hospital (Antony Balch, 1973)

Come on, this was shown on terrestrial TV for all to see, surely it deserves a thread on its own?

I watched this last weekend, and I have to say it's a brilliantly realized lump of cheddar. I had an absolute blast with it, and was thankful that the good old BBC didn't just go to the bottom of their horror barrel, but they actually pulled the barrel away from the wall to see if anything had fallen behind it and been forgotten.

Just look at the stars in this one: Michael Gough, Robin Askwith... okay, so they're the only "stars". But what the hell, they put in a terrific turn.

The plot is simple enough, some guy (ex Nazi, the WORST kind of guy) has situated himself off the beaten track to continue his experiments, aided by a dwarf (when you can't afford a hunchback, a dwarf'll do!). It's all something to do with "Mind Control", but it's the kind that entails actually cutting into the brain and stirring things up, as evidenced by the huge putty scars on the foreheads. A pop singer (Askwith), stumbles upon this bizarre place by accident, a pop singer needing a little break. Or maybe they cast him because, without a brain, he'd be impossible to control - who knows?

The film is bad, cheap, and extremely silly. Which, of course, is the charm. I absolutely loved it. I wanted to go to bed, but there was no way I was going to walk away from the film (right after it was done, I went ahead and ordered up the DVD).

Best scene? Definitely the car with the blades and basket for head collection. If you think about it, the blade would have struck people in the midriff, but somehow, it's the head that comes off. No matter.

Excellent entertainment this. Surely I wasn't alone in sampling it?

It's a guilty pleasure of mine; I have the US Elite DVD.

Yeah, that's what I ordered too.

I think this is a wonderful little film. In all seriousness, if watching films is primarily about entertainment, then this is tops.

Always enjoy this one. The bird's a smasher and Dennis Price actually seems to have kept off the sauce, unlike his blotto Frankenstein for Jesus Franco around the same time.

Balch also released films such as Bresson's AU HAZARD, BALTHAZAR and Godard's VIVRE SA VIE in the U.K. and made avant-garde/undeerground films with William Burroughs.

If memory serves me correctly Vipco released Horror Hospital onto VHS in the 90's.I thought they may have released it onto DVD as well, perhaps they didn't.I've caught it a couple of times on TV and thoroughly enjoyed it.I thought Dennis Price was hilarious in this selling Robin Askwith a hairy holiday at Michael Gough's massacre mansion.

Wow. I ordered this DVD after watching over the weekend, and at the same time decided to throw Tower of Evil into same basket.

I was going to start a thread on this after sitting up and watching the second half when it was on at the weekend (despite already having it taped from a previous showing), but didn't get round to it. Shame on the BBC continuity announcer who gabbled over the end credits though. Is the DVD widescreen, as the BBC version looks fine full-frame.

This is a camp classic, but intentionally so. There's much to savour in it (corny dialogue, the dwarf falling over when he's trying to move the drugged guards etc).

Antony Balch was quite a character, its a shame he was distributing films when the BBFC was so censorious. I'm sure he would have had a ball with things the way they are now...

Caught Secrets Of Sex in a one-off cinema showing in the 80s and would like to track it down again sometime, maybe on the Synapse DVD if its still available.

Balch's Secrets of Sex is available on DVD as Bizarre. It comes with his Burroughs shorts Towers Open Fire and Cut-Ups. It's an essential purchase.

Yes I picked up the Elite DVD too a few years ago and have to say I enjoyed it immensely. Not only a clever, tongue-in-cheek pastiche of the British horror genre but also a great, gory show in its own right.

    Terrific fun.

Here is my review too from a while back.

I shouldn't see you being too disappointed with Tower Of Evil either Vaughan. Good British precursor to the slasher craze which holds its own in terms of gore and also weaves a nice, eerie menacing atmosphere around its small, isloated island setting.

I certainly enjoyed it and eagerly anticipate your thoughts when you find time to watch it.

Screaming patient hauled away by helmeted bikers at the dinner table, Robin Askwith - 'what the f**k's going on!' - hilarious

I love the chase scene through the woods with accompanying music thats a cross between Where Eagles Dare and Dick Barton, and Fredrick's heroic death

Anyone else notice some of the music was also used in "Dawn of the Dead" and (I think) "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"? (gotta love the DeWolf library)!

Best line in the film for me "Women are such troublesome creatures, but then so is an annoying little man" WACK!!!! (hits dwarf with stick)
    Best Wishes

I have happy memories of Horror Hospital on VHS! And Tower of Evil, which I'm too scared to watch in case I obliterate my nostalgia!
