As a few of you may know I regularly contribute to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, mainly working on the pages of the usual (british sex film) suspects. However in the last few weeks this really has been more trouble than its worth, due mainly to the exploits of one “David in DC”, who removed vital information on several subjects.
First up was Mary Millington who he removed both her birth name, her married name, her husband’s name and her mother’s name. His reasoning for this seems obscure, but from what I can work out his worries seem to be that there was no “reliable” sources for this information and that the revelation of these names could cause embarrassment for her surviving family. All of which is frankly ludicrous, there are umpteenth reliable sources for Mary’s birth and married names, in fact virtually every print and internet source on her mentions her birth and married names, and as the Quilter family made themselves available for Simon Sheridan’s book on her they clearly have no objection to her birth name (their family name) being used in conjunction with her career. I restored this information, and he opened a “debate” about this in her talk page, where I responded by making this case. This seems to have shut him up where Mary is concerned, but….
However last night he found a new target this time Miss Suzy Mandel, who he removed her birth/family name (I think we’re seeing a pattern here) from her Wikipedia page, and started yet another “debate” in her talk page. This despite the fact that her Wikipedia page linked to an article which gave Suzy’s birth name and contained quotes from her in which she herself gave her family’s name (clearly he doesn’t think Suzy Mandel is a reliable source of information on her own life!!!).
Again I’ve restored her birth name and responded to his debate. The ironic thing here is that I actually know Suzy, and in the past she has supplied me with information specifically for me to use on Wikipedia. She has no problem with any of the info on her at Wikipedia, in fact she was very happy with it. Try telling this to idiot “David in DC” though.
I’m by no means a confrontational person, and to be honest hate getting into arguments like this, but he is senselessly deleting material which I’ve gone to great effort to work on, and its just so bloody frustrating. Could I ask that people contribute to these two debates and voice their support for me in arguing the Mary and Suzy’s real names should be included on Wikipedia. All you have to do is follow the links below, click on where it says “edit this page”, then scroll down to the bottom of the text, add a comment, then click “save page”. Messages of support will be greatly welcomed.
