Re: Multi-Region Blu-ray Players - UK based shop

I'm going to arrange for my Panasonic DMP-BD30 to be chipped, as it only cost me £275 off the avforum.......I think paying a £160 so I don't have the hassel of region coding will be worth it. Besides if I buy the new Pioneer, my missus will hit the roof as it will be my 4th Blu-ray player in the last 16 months. I'm well and truely happy with the Panasonic & this way she'll be none the wiser to my extra spend.
Once I'm sorted I'll let you know how things have gone.

I've got no complaints with it. I know when it was 1st reviewed, it was aledged that the PS3 was better with DVD upscaling. IMHO I think the Panasonic is way better as a dedicated deck than the PS3 & worth every penny. Having said that if you like games the PS3 gives you a lot for your money. At the end of the day, it's either Movies or Games......mines Movies so the Panasonic's been a good buy.

DVD upscaling is one contentious issue for me, Ive seen two machines so far, and both were poor.
The SOny Blu-Ray machine I saw last year made all upscaled DVDs pixelate to hell, and the upscaling DVD player a friend had (dont recall the make) had this weird thing where objects that moved up or down screen woould get fatter and thinner as they went. Very irritating.

But the Panasonic is good and doesn't do either of these?

I watch 95% SD-DVD Vs 5% Blu-ray I've never had any upscaling issues with the Panasonic.
Saying that I never have with any of my SD-DVD players. At the moment I have a Pioneer DV-400 & a Pioneer DVR-LX60D both again are excellent at upscailing.

This is the fourth review I've read that says that the BD50 has problems with DVD upscaling, casuing a lot of Jaggies. This was the model I was looking at and eager to obtian.

I've read too many off-putting reviews regarding it's DVD upscaling now. I'm going to give Blu-Ray a miss for the moment, and wait for a machine that's better at upscaling before buying.

Well, I ended up selling my Panasonic DMP-BD30 and bought myself a Pioneer BDP-LX71.

Was going to arrange to have the Pioneer modified today but after reading into what they have to do to the player I've decided to give it a miss.

Doing these Blu-ray mods is a lot more complicated than It use to be with SD-DVD, they virtually have to strip the unit to replace the old components with the new ones and then you have to update firmwares for both region A & B. I will be holding off for a while until a less traumatic mod comes along.

There's no other way of fitting the mod sadly. There's simply no easy way due to the way they are constructed.

From what I read It was pretty complicated. I would suggest if anyone is thinking about having a Blu-ray player moded, don't buy It else where and then have It done! Buy It already done as the company selling the moded player honour the warranty. If you have It done buy a mod company and you've purchased your player else where, your warranty would be void in the case of breakdown not relating to the mod.
Failing a mod It may be easier to Import a US player.

Anyone got any other more reasonable priced places I can get my Blu-ray players modified?

The 2 here are a little expensive, looking for less than £150. The amount of titles now being Region locked in the US seems to be increasing greatly. Shout in particular seem to be locking everything!

Re: Multi-Region Blu-ray Players - UK based shop

Picked one up from the AVForums for £50 as new, only 2 weeks old. Next time I upgrade my Pioneer, hopefully prices will have come down and I'll be able to get a multi-region one to replace having 2 players.

*This is now for sale if anyones looking for one* About 7 months warranty & used around 5 times. Boxed with everything. Will throw in 2GB of USB storage for BD Live. Looking for £50 delivered. PM me.

Are there any good, cheap multi-region BR players currently available here in the UK?
