Watched Blood Sabbath with Dyanne Thorne the other night. I had a bad virus, so I had a fever, the chills, the sweats, nausea, the works. I must say this was the perfect accompaniment for this flick. Overlong POV shots of nekkid chicks dancing juxtaposed with POV shots of some overacting white guy shocked and grossed with weird funk music playing in the background, throw in some tedium, bad acting, the obligatory blood sabbath, and fidelity that looks like your watching the film through a fish bowl and you're left with a bad acid experience, minus drugs. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Shocking Heavy Metal Kind of dopey, and yet kind of mint at the same time, retitling of Blood Tracks. Gorier than I remember the Vista VHS being. The scene where the guy gets the axe in the head is definitely longer too as the kreepy kid gets a couple more slugs pumped into him, too. Kool!

    The Road Warrior

The last time I watched it was many years ago. A complete 180 change from the first Max movie-which was more character-driven, this one felt more sketchy, but like a spaghetti western with Raiders-style car action and mythic atmosphere. Although I assume it set the post-apocalyptic genre--I dont remember any 80s movie that even came close to emulating it as an experience since, though there was much room for imitation. Metalstorm certainly did not. Lord Humungus, the mohawk gang members, and the dog leave the strongest impression, more so than Gibson I'd say. The ayatollah of rock and rolla sounds rather like Cookie Monster but more articulate and polite. Although it is more sketchy in character than the previous one, ironic how Max sets out to use the refinery town, but in the end he is used by them, thinking he was driving the fuel truck.

KEL- are you responding to my Mad Max thread?

Just backtracked and could't see in this thread where I'd discussed MMIII? In Starstruck thread rlr and I digressed and ended up discussing the Mad Max films in there.

But anyway, I understand your post?

(In fact I'm getting a urge right now to see the TOECUTTER, and Max stand-off, driving action in the original, that scene where the first interceptor is trying to line the shotgun up and misses and hits the sign, and for some reason, the lights on the cars, beaming out of the scene, it's crazy and violent stuff, high octane, literally!)

Hey, thehamish - I used to have THE SENDER on VHS, recorded from when it was shown on TV one time ('84?'85? Pretty sure it was on BBC 1 or 2) but hadn't seen it since then. But it was amazing how much came back to me after re-seeing it for the first time in decades (the Jesus figure's fear of decapitation, etc.). Great also to see the likes of Gary Olsen and John Sessions as extras. I was pretty much captivated from start to finish - the only reason points were taken away is that it seems to lack a real sense of fear. Otherwise, cracking.

Bloody hell, BLOOD TRACKS looks awfully amazing, Rollo! I have memories of the poster but never seen the film. This is from the same director as THE NINJA MISSION, right?

A cheese metal band, some groupies, a hills have eyes family, some gore and loopy dubbing. How could it not be fun? Not a must see classic, but good fun nonetheless. I've never heard of Ninja Mission. Am going to have to check IMDB.

INSERTS (1974) - 9/10 (very brave turns by all involved, and what a cast: Richard Dreyfus, Veronica Cartwright, Bob Hoskins and my personal fave Jessica Harper)

PENNIES FROM HEAVEN (1981) - 8/10 (much better than its reputation suggests, though there are frankly too many song 'n' dance numbers squeezed into the running time and Steve Martin is very much outshone by his co-stars: Bernadette Peters, Christopher Walken and, once again, Jessica Harper)

GAMES (1967) - 7/10 (another great cast and good direction by Curtis Harrington, but GAMES leans it a little too heavily on LES DIABOLIQUES to be entirely enjoyable in its own right)

Decided to bring my movie watching into the 90s for a change from the 60s and 70s so I watched In The Line of Fire. Wasnt made all that long ago yet sure seems like ancient history compared to today in terms of quality story-telling. I am particularly impressed by the dialogue with some great exchanges between Malkovich and Eastwood. The sole screenwriter Jeff Maguire got his career start with the story for Escape to Victory which I watched the other night. Doesnt seem to have done very much as a writer and was at the poverty level when he finally sold ITLOF to Eastwood after a bidding war with Tom Cruise. Yuck. What a different movie that would have made. Familiar faces in the supporting cast--I noticed Tobin Bell who I remember from at least one Eastwood movie prior to this in a bit part and in a few other things before he turned up in SAW. And Steve Railsback who made one great Charles Manson.

Saw this one at the cinema and it's definitely one of Clint's better later films. And he still got the woman!

Wish I saw it theatrically. My movie going habits were too frugal. Went to see the big box office ones and sequels but missed out on a lot of decent films that have had more repeat-viewing value.

Why oh why did I see Explorers and Creepshow 2 in a theater? Why oh why?

TEEN LUST (1979) - um, not sure what to say about this supposed good-time comedy! One of the most ineptly produced, directed (by James Hong) and edited movies I've seen in a long while. But it's so fuckin' un-PC and out there that it takes on a strange, mind-melting fascination. Gang rape, incest, racism, alcoholism... all your comedy favourites are right here! Poor old Kirsten Baker - she had a genuinely likeable screen presence but really did star in some right old shit. And TEEN LUST makes GAS PUMP GIRLS (a personal fave despite itself) look like CITIZEN KANE by comparison.

Recommended for lovers of the absolute arse-end of drive-in culture. TEEN LUST would make for a truly off-kilter double-bill with 1978's MAG WHEELS (another two-cents movie that sports a jaw-droppingly cavalier attitude to, y'know, rape 'n' stuff). 5/10

TWO THIRDS of ESCAPE FROM L.A.

    Well, first time for me!

Seemed promising contrary to everything I'd heard on the wind about this movie (I was anticipating a big bag of green ooze tied up with padlocks and best left at the bottom of a lake) and low and behold it kicked off with energy and some verve I have to say and was shaping up to be a faithful take/continuation to the orginal, or at least a kind of remake in all but jacket and trousers.

Graphics were pretty interesting, the rocket powered mini-sub was nifty and by the time we got onto the new island of L.A. I was quite involved and on for the ride...and then, the action stumbled... it had an A-Team feel to it, cartoon-y, we've been there before and worse, the look some of those action films had in the late nineties (+ did anybody else notice that whole silver gun with extra bits thing that was going on at the time?) with OTT stunts which went on and on with clinging to the tops of cars... so, my interest waned and the villain quickly became something of a dullard and then it was getting late and I ran out of time, so missed the "I believe it would have been predictable" ending. Pheew- breathe.

May have to give this another chance and watch the last "third".

Anybody remember the days of Moviedrome, Alex Cox keeps the old Moviedrome reviews/booklets at his website Alexcox.com. His reveiw of Escape from New York is interesting, he saw it as a 'lost chance' and that it could have been better in terms of scope and depth.

As I watched Esape from L.A. I thought about Mr Coxes comments and so saw this version as a second opportunity of sorts, a chance to expand on the first film with improved graphics and a larger budget to boot, but unfortunately it seemed to go the way of another missed chance. What is it with sequels.

All of that said... this may do a u-turn on me and I become a fan.

I found ESCAPE FROM L.A. a complete remake of the previous one too and that surf scene was pretty bad effects wise, not something I would watch again but the first one I would and do many many times.

It's interesting how the special-effects in the original still hold-up Blink!

I really dig that opening scene with the helicopter trailing across the screen and Manhatten Island in darkness. Eerie.
