Yes indeed I do remember it. Takes me back to being a 3rd year at secondary school.

I also have fond memories of buying this single too...

    Re: Youtube thread.

We used to think it was hilarious to go into record shops at the height of punk (this would be around 77/78) and ask for the latest records..

"have you got the Electic Chairs new single?"
    "What's it called"
    "**** OFF"

    Or...
"have you got the new ATV single"?
    "What's it called"
    "YOU BASTARD"

    Kids eh?

I used to buy a lot of my punk stuff from a shop in Earlsfield where I lived. It was called "Sounds Cool" - I remember watching an episode of Citizen Smith being filmed there one afternoon (it wasn't too far from Tooting). Anyway, I'd go through the record rack and pick up anything that looked a bit odd. I had no idea what I was letting myself in for when I picked up a couple of records by a band called The Pork Dukes. One single was called "Telephone Masturbator." The cover and lyrics were hilarious!

Loved ANL for a while, very funny (my favourite song/single was Woman).

Is it true Journey are still going, with a Chinese Joe Perry soundalike, or something? How strange ...

Listened to The Accused earlier today ("More Fun Than ...") and Mr Bungle's debut. Continuing to revisit those eras at the mo.

I've no idea, I'm not really a fan of Journey , they have done a few good songs though "Who's Crying Now" and "Don't Stop Believing" etc, great songs.

'70s punk bores me to be honest, I prefer the later stuff like Superjoint Ritual, Refused, Black Flag, Bad Religion, *early* AFI, Pennywise, Sick Of It All and Rancid etc.

The Accused were late 80's/early 90s, brilliant crossover punk/thrash stuff.

Mr Bungle was Mike Patton's pre-FNM outfit, the debut was produced by the legendary John Zorn - a truly great album, if you're in the right frame of mind

Oh, no I was referring to ANL, they were '70s, right?

Mr. Bungle are alright, much like Patton's other work they were very hit or miss imo. I've not heard much of The Accused though, any recommendations?

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

Sorry, I should've picked up on that.

ANL were early 80s, I think. But I know what you mean.

Accused were late 80's (first album was 87). They were hardcore punk crossed with thrash, quite metallic, and very good in their prime. Best albums were the first two: "Martha Splatterhead" (I forget the full title) and "More Fun Than An Open Casket Funeral".

A lot of people prefer the first one, but my soul is given to "More Fun".

I agree regarding Mr Bungle. VERY hit and miss (like FNM, funnily enough).

    Cheers for the lyrics, Marc.

I've known this song for decades, and clearly a lot of the lyrics are easy to make out (particularly the profane ones). But I never knew he sucked sweets!

    It's not "crack" though, it "t**t" ...

The Pork Dukes, in case you didn't know, were actually the Goldring brothers, formerly of early 70s folk-proggers Gnidrolog!! Special guests that appeared on their "releases" (fnar, fnar) also included members of Steeleye Span (such as drummer Nigel Pegrum, who had been in the Gnids with them), and allegedly Roger Taylor of Queen.

They weren't the only prog folkies to have disguised themselves as punks: famously, Richard Hudson and John Ford of Velvet Opera, Strawbs (and of course their own band Hudson Ford) reconfigured in 1977 as The Monks (no relation to the 60s psych act) and charted with "Nice Legs, Shame About The Face", whilst Stackridge also enjoyed New Wave skinny tie hits as "The Korgis", former Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie turned up alongside ex-Beatstalker Alan Mair in The Only Ones, and Gryphon became "The Banned" It seems there was a lot of this behaviour about. Several members of Crass and my personal fave, PoisonGirls, also had hippie pasts which they were quite open about: indeed, they continued to live in communes right through punk.

I actually emailed the Dukes a while back through their MySpace about the possibility of a Glasgow gig: in the end I stopped working at the venue, so nothing came of the idea. But I'm glad to know that they (and their wonderfully titled label "Wood Records") are still in operation. Squeal Meat Again, indeed!!

Regarding Marc's record-shop shenanigans I should also draw atention to the 1988 release from Italian hardcore-crossoverists **** Off, and the aforementioned Faith No More's 1990 live album/video "You Fat Bastards", both of which can be used for the same chucklesome purposes. There was also an Industrial/punkfunk band in the early 80s who rejoiced in the wonderful moniker "I Am Drinking My Own Sperm", but that might have been a little metaphysical for the purposes of such a conversation.

Anyone here a fan of "Playing Golf With My Flesh Crawling" by Family Fodder?

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

Didn't So What? get withdraw from sale at the time? I think it was something to do with the Obscene Publications Act. As a consequence it didn't appear on their debut album, We Are...The League.

One has been grooving to '80s Paisley underground psychedelic band the Rain Parade of late. Some very nice songs to be found on their Emergency Third Rail Power Trip lp, as well as the Vampyros Lesbos Sexadelic Dance Party soundtrack.

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

That's right, that shows up on the original vinyl lp, along with both sides of the second single, I Hate People/Let's Break The Law, so it seemed odd that So What? didn't appear. Incidentally a cleaned-up version of Woman from the lp was the third single. Strangely enough the otherwise very comprehensive cd version of the album has a cleaned-up version of Animal, but not the raunchier version that appears on the original vinyl release.

Apparently the band were asked to do Top of the Pops to promote I Hate People. However they refused to do a non-sweary version for the show, and therefore didn't appear, although the lead singer gloatingly revealed that they still got paid for turning up!

My favourite ANL song has to be "The Landlord Is A ****ing ******", which I rejoice in seeing them perform live occasionally.

Having lived in the Sussex/Kent belt from which they hail, I can testify that the opening lyrics of "So What" make a lot of sense!! The question is, what exactly do Hetfield and Co. think they are referring to? I doubt if they've ever spent much time in Eastbourne or Hastings, althought they might have played Brighton Centre once.

Runaway by Del Shannon is one of the best songs ever written, who agrees?

PS, it reminds me of the first Children Of The Corn movie.

An absolute musical masterpiecve, pioneering in everything from its production techniques to its use of synthesiser. And a great melody.

When I was at Freak Emporium I reviewed and added to the sales database an album by the chaps who played synth on that very song, and quite good it was too. But I'm buggered if I can remember their names!!
