Music Thread / What Are You Listening To?

Bollocks - sorry guys, I accidentally deleted it

I didn't realise deleting the first post deleted the entire thread!

    So here's a new one.

While I work I feel you just can't beat Jean Michel Jarre's seminal Oxygene for chilling out to. I bought this album when it first came out in 1978 too - bloody hell!

Mind your language please Marc .

Oh bollards, I've just realised my small claim to fame has been deleted (an uncle, drummer of The Charlatans, a band that's actually come out of Birmingham). Oh well.

I've not heard Epsilon in Malaysian Pale. I always felt Edgar Froese was way better with Tangerine Dream, although I do have his Aqua album.

My fave Tangerine Dream albums of all time are Phaedra (1974) and Rubycon (1975).

Well, I'll carry on with my Cure fixation anyway...

Listened to Faith last night, which must be their shortest album, although it doesn't lack anything for it. Even though the album continues the meloncholy atmosphere from Seventeen Seconds, there are a few upbeat tracks here, seemingly echoing the ghost of the late 70's new wave punk era. The music is very minimalist, but the effect is amazing. My stand out track is probably The Drowning Man, which is as disturbing in construction as it is lyrically.

A brilliant album, only bettered slightly by the tribal, melancholy masterpiece that is Pornography!

I'll have to buy the rest of the CD's now...

Have you heard their soundtrack to the short film Carnage Visors? This came as a B side on the original 1981 cassette release only of Faith and is now back in the Faith Deluxe Edition box set.

I must admit that I've never heard Carnage Visors. All I know about it is that it was used by The Cure on one of their tours as the soundtrack to an animated film they had on instead of a support band. Do you know about that? What's the soundtrack like?

Maybe I should have invested in those Deluxe Editions after all!

    "Nothing left but faith..."

    Those records are great.

I bought the Primal Scream dvd a month back, it's fun.

I have tickets for Neil Young at a hop farm in Paddock Wood in Kent in July. Primal Scream are playing as well. Should be fun. I'm staying in a caravan.

I picked up Jonathan Demmes HEART OF GOLD Neil Young concert film recently; you can smell the emotion man, his dads just died, he'd almost died from the brain thing - the way his wife and sister look at him when he's singing in this film is genuinely moving.

Take a quick look here. The film has all but vanished.

YouTube: The Cure - CARNAGE VISORS - 45 Seconds Clip ! and you can here more of it here (set to a silly image).

ps: If you like The Cure and The Banshees then I suggest you pick up The Glove album Blue Sunshine. The Deluxe Edition contains a bonus disc with the original Robert Smith voiced demo tracks

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

Cheers, Marc. I'll look later as my workplace has YouTube blocked (surprise, surprise!)

I'll be buying Japanese Whispers, The Top, Head On The Door and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me next. I've got the latter two on vinyl and it's been years since I heard the former two in all their glory.

Any idea if Blue Sunshine by The Glove is an essential purchase?

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

Yes, I'd say Blue Sunshine is essential. When it first came out I played it to death. I also have some tracks from the album performed by The Glove on an old (mid 80s?) TV episode of Riverside.

In fact... just found those very video clips on YouTube: Orgy + Punish Me With Kisses.

Oh, and The Glove and Blue Sunshine are both movie titles..

And the track ORGY is based on the pool scene in CALIGULA (My Little Fishes).

Re: Music Thread or: What Are You Listening To?

I've never really been certain of how I feel about The Cure. Some songs I love - Just Like Heaven and Pictures Of You in particular - but I'm just not inclined to explore the highly rated earlier albums. I must have heard Faith etc over the years but I can't remember feeling sufficiently intrigued to get my own copy. These comments have got me thinking though...

Btw - when I sang in a band (about 10 years ago now) people used to say I sounded like Robert Smith and our music had a Cure-like flavour . Actually, it always frustrated me at the time cos I was going for a Tim Smith (Cardiacs) "style" and didn't want the band associated with what I saw as the 80's goth so beloved of the Northampton underground scene - if you could call it that .

I wanted us to be more krautrock/psychedelic/punk with a bit of new wave jerkiness. Looking back, there's much worse comparisons than The Cure...(Gene Loves Jezebel anyone?).

Had Radio K.A.O.S. on the Zen this morning - haven't listened to it in a while which is silly because it's great

Didn't they take their band name from Yellow Submarine?

Yes, they did, but it's funny that both are movie titles in their own right.

Well, I last listened to The Cure on a daily basis when hanging around with a bunch of Futurists/Numanoids/Goth-types back in the early - mid 80's. I sort of kept up with the odd track, although I had some of their stuff on vinyl. It's only now that I've decided to take the plunge and get back into it. And what classic stuff it is, with many memories coming back. I think I enjoy it more now than I did back then!

I just looked and, lo and behold, there is a John Saxon effort from 1979 called The Glove! You learn something new every day...

Whilst I do like those albums, my favourites are Cyclone and Force Majeure - 2 amazing albums that everyone should hear at least once.

Aye, Ade, you can't keep a good man down.

And back on topic, even though this is off topic (confused?) - I dug out some Tangerine Dream to have a listen to again. I found I really liked Tangram this time round, an album I've never really warmed to, and Logos is a great live showcase of the band. Great stuff.
