The Invisible Ray (Lambert Hillyer, 1936)

    Watched this last night.

And what a special FX tour-de-force it is! Laser beams, glowing men, fizzing rocks, spontaneous combustion! It had it all. Add a trip to Africa and a wonderful gothic opening into the mix, and you have yet another classic Universal film.

This is included in the Bela Lugosi box set in R1, but let's face it, it's a Karloff film really - Lugosi is relegated to secondary status. Still, he's good in it, and just to see Karloff with that somewhat silly mop of curly hair is easily enough to justify the film.

I really enjoyed this, yet another wonderful slice of entertainment.

Jeez, its been years since i last saw this,on c4 way back, and i can remember it being very good. This box set is also in my wish list,so will probably get round to purchasing it sometime this year.

Have the snake people to watch, one of karloffs last flicks, shot in mexico, but i aint expecting much from it!

Yeah, it's good fun. I taped it off Channel 4 in 1985 and was dumb enough to tape over it shortly after. Really got back into Universal and other Karloff/Lugosi stuff over the last 5 or so years.

I really must get this Karloff/ Lugosi set!
Damn it! I must have it.
I haven't got region 1 facilities at the moment though.
Why don't region 2 have anything good!

You should be able to hack into your player to make it multi-region. I did.

Without being region free, you're just playing at DVD.

I can see where you're going wrong, I thought we were taLking about DVD's, and not "life". If you don't take "life" seriously, well, that's how accidents happen. With DVD, you wouldn't have to pine for movies if you uncrippled your player.

Well, I wouldn't say my player is crippled- a touch of arthritis perhaps- any way I am getting a multi region one! Cheers!

No, it's definately crippled. Some nitwit has set an option to prevent it doing something it natively does just fine. Hopefully you have one that is easily fixed - all mine currently allow for changes to be made through the remote control. Voila! uncrippled!
