    More Jess Franco!

    From Fangoria:

Severin Films has unearthed two more shockers from the bottomless Jess Franco filmography, and will release them both uncut and uncensored for the first time in America, and on DVD for the first time in the world, in 16x9-enhanced 2.35:1 transfers. Both star Franco regular Lina Romay under the pseudonym Candy Coster, and in MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD she’s one of four waitresses whose carnal vacation on the Canary Islands is interrupted by a group of flesheating zombie Templar Knights. The film will be accompanied by a featurette called The Mansion Jess Built, including new interviews with Franco and Romay. MACUMBA SEXUAL has Romay/Coster as a young woman haunted by Princess Obongo, the “Goddess of Unspeakable Lust,” with plenty of sex and violence ensuing. This one will come with the Franco/Romay interview featurette Voodoo Jess; both discs will retail for $29.95 each.

And guess who set the deal up?

These have also been acquired by none other than Anchor Bay UK, along with several other Franco titles.

ps - those are not the final cover art.

The US discs will of course be uncut. The new masters are in the process of being struck now. The UK releases won't be going to the BBFC until some time nest year, so it's unknown at this stage how they will fare.

I'm really looking forward to seeing these discs, the 1980s is a very little known Franco period. Hope they sell well and we get more of the titles that Severin have discussed (and generally more from that interesting period).

I wonder if we will be getting a nice Jess Franco boxset here in the UK?

I don't mean to sound contentious, but Franco is an acquired taste to begin with - the 80's and 90's stuff??????? MARI COOKIE AND THE KILLER TARANTULA anyone?

always up for a bit of Ajita Wilson though.

Franco is hit and miss but theres something that just hooks you in with his films, even the bad ones. I prefer his 60's output

I prefer his Sixties output too, but these Eighties 'Golden Films period' movies really are well worth seeing.

Well I'm happily ignorant on these new ones as I have never seen them and as so I look foward to some wacky Franco time.

Personally when it comes to Franco I would always plump for the Harry Alan Towers era as his most productive period of filmmaking, with El Conde Dracula being his best film ever in my estimation.

OK, who's seen Cuadecuc Vampir? It was shot 'behind the scenes' of Franco's Count Dracula, and features footage of Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom, Soledad Miranda and Jack Taylor. It's for the best part silent with a bizarre soundtrack, although Chris Lee does get to rehearse some of his lines.

I've suggested that this be included as an extra on the upcoming (2007) MPI US release of Count Dracula, so as usual, fingers crossed on this.

Wow Marc that is exciting! I take it you have seen this? If so reports would be nice. Also lets pray they take you up on your suggestion as that would be a superb extra to include! I for one am excited as I wasn't aware this even existed. I will cross everything to see this turn up thats for sure.

Being a vampire and all that, won't that be like...you know...suicide?

I'm always up for a bit of Franco. Not sure if he's an acquired taste or not - I think you really need to be a bit gone in the head to fully appreciate his cinematic sensibility. That's probably why I like his films so much - they're like cinematic equivalents of the sh*t going on in my head.

Wow - the print quality on the Severin discs is amazing. Not a hint of print damage, and some wonderful looking transfers. See my preview page for some nice pictures. I'll be fully reviewing the films closer to street date.

    Re: More Jess Franco!

Reviews now up: Streeting on Tuesday, this duo of Franco's Golden era films makes for very interesting viewing, and come on some fantastic looking DVDs, certainly a good sign for things to come from Severin:

    Macumba Sexual (1981)
Strange, surreal, twisted and sexually charged - Franco at his best here in a very effective film. Highly recommended to Franco fans.

Mansion of the Living Dead (1982)
An interesting film that boasts a mix of strong direction and atmosphere, with some rather unnecessary humour and sex. Of interest to Franco fans but not for newcomers.

That second wave of Franco discs is out now in the US (for those too impatient to wait for the ABUK set) and they look amazing:

The Sexual Story of O (1984)

The Inconfessable Orgies of Emmanuelle (1981)
