OK, I have a girl friend who hates horror movies but has agreed to watch a "scary" film with me if I endure MAID IN MANHATTAN in return.
I want something that will really assault her senses. I was going to put THE EVIL DEAD or TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE on ... I think they'll do the trick!
Any better suggestions though? Any ideas welcome.
PS Of course I'm not going to see MAID IN MANHATTAN ... I'll break that to her AFTER I've scared her stupid though!

The Innocents, The Woman In Black or Robert Wise's The Haunting are genuinely creepy films.

HMMM
I'd try The Ring ( original) or The Eye. Both have really creepy moments.

YEAH The Haunting!!
I always recommend that one for a really good scary movie!!
Is she afraid of anything? ie clowns?
My girlfriend saw CLOWNHOUSE years ago & won't watch it again as she has been scared of clowns since she was little.
or...
how about NEW YORK RIPPER she may like Fulci's views towards women!!!:D
The Exorcist!! Still the only film that scares the **** out of me & I first saw it 20 years ago!!
SUSPIRIA !?
Just be careful not to get offended when you show her a film that YOU like and think it will scare her & she laughs or tells you it's crap!!!
Although that will depend on her age. The older she is the more likely she'll be scared.

If she's the type to get absorbed in movies (i.e. has an attention span of up to two hours), you could try hitting her with The Thing or Carnival Of Souls (though Carnival may simply elecit laughter). Perhaps you could subtley question her on things that scare her and then select a movie accordingly.

TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD!!!!!!!!
It just has to be TOMBS. To someone uninitiated to that sort of film this will frighten the living hell out of her.
Their are not many films more chilling than this

A Warning to the Curious (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=110099): genuinely petrifying story of a man stalked by a ghost after he excavates an ancient crown
Ghostwatch (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=110037): still surprisingly unsettling and effective after all these years
Carnival of Souls (http://www5.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=2996): absolutely electrifying atmosphere - best watched late at night with all the lights off
Sisters (http://www5.cd-wow.com/detail_results_2.php?product_code=3036): Brian De Palma's finest - a deliciously suspensful and shocking slasher whodunnit
The House by the Cemetery (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R1&title=93408): genuinely frightening and appallingly gruesome, with a tremendous sustained atmosphere and a few unintentional chuckles to boot
Paperhouse (http://www.playserver4.com/play247.asp?page=title&r=R2&title=94405): wonderfully creepy film about dreams - the trailer scared the **** out of me when I was five.

For genuinely scary movies capable of really chilling the old spine, I would suggest the following:
THE STONE TAPE
SESSION 9
THE EXORCIST
AN URBAN GHOST STORY
THE WOMAN IN BLACK (the stage show is highly recommended)
THE CHANGELING
KILL, BABY....KILL!
THE HAUNTING
THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE
THE DEVILS BACKBONE
THE OTHERS

I didn't bother to watch this.
Is it actually worth watching then?
It looked ok, but how many films in past years look good from the trailers & turn out to be "tre poo poo caca"!!! (to quote TheBalun!)

If you've watched or read any amount of ghost stories, you'll have this one worked out within about 20 minutes.
And Nicole Kidman's "caught in the headlights of a car" style of acting doesn't help the credibility of the situation.
Saying that, loads of people liked it.
As they say, there's no accounting for taste.

well try legend of hell house always good for a friday night chiller.
Also the creeping flesh is quite good as well, scared the hell out of a mate of mine a few years ago with that one.

See where you're coming from, Harry. I was surprised Kidman got Oscar nominated for this, rather than MOULIN ROUGE. Then again, she's just won for THE HOURS where, although she is very good, Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep outshone her.
I would say THE OTHERS is well worth a look, though it's certainly a long way from being a class scare act.

I'd agree with Steve L.
Give 'Session 9' a go.
Very underestimated and overlooked film. And also ideal for a 'non' horror person.

i'd also have to say session 9, what a great movie that was. how about the shining, thats about the only movie to ever give me a bit of a creepy feeling when watching.
or halloween ,when i first watched that as a kid i almost had a trouser accident :(

SESSION 9 was a great little film.
It kind of just came out, no fanfare or anything.
I liked the look of the cover (the sepia/brown tones hhmmmmm) & the fact that it had TheCaruso in it!!
Def. an underestimated film.
iinteresting to hear the comm. track as well.

Cheers for all the suggestions so far!
My friend has her own house and tends to get scared by stalker-in-the-home type thrillers (PANIC ROOM freaked her out big style), so HALLOWEEN was a good call - that should do the trick!
And WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, perhaps. That kind of thing.

DEATHLINE - stark realism and stomach churning gore. Donald Pleasance at his best!
ROSEMARY'S BABY - Another nice little horror very much grounded in a believable setting.
THE THING - Saw it when I was a kid and god did it scare the living s**t out of me!
ALIEN - This was another my Dad let me watch when I was little, I always hid up at the egg hatching and the chest busting.
FROM BEYOND - Not one of the best films but definately one of the scummiest.
RE-ANIMATOR - Great entertainment. Hilarious and horrible in the right amounts.
GHOSTWATCH - It may sound sad but this is the only thing that actually makes my flesh crawl. I remember seeing most of it at the time (Halloween... god knows how many years ago..) But Dad kept channel hopping and then decided we shouldn't watch it. But that wasn't till after I saw the Girl speaking in the old man's voice. Infact those girls were the only thing that was bad about the whole production
THE SHINING - Terrified me as a child. It was just so damn unsettling. And I never liked Tony's voice. Kids creep me out in films.
AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON - Funny and Horrific. Another I saw as a kid. The transformation sequence was almost unbearable.
SALEM'S LOT - My Dad let me watch this too. And I could never leave curtains open after it got dark ever again. Danny Glick was too much to take.
Nah, don't hold back - show her Cannibal Holocaust. :p

If you contact me by personal email Claire i will send you DARKNESS, the film by LOS SIN NOMBRE director Jaume Balaguero. It was made in English so there will be no arguments between you and your friend and is probably going to be a good start as it is AWESOME and recent too! Not seen by too may people so far as it has had very limited European release, been picked up in the US but not released after over a year or more and only just recently hit dvd in Spain...
I will send you it for free purely so both of you can have a great time being scared witless!
