BBC's 1979 adaptation of Emile Zola's tale is well worth seeing.

What starts off as a fairly routine costume drama love story, soon descends into a tale of lust, murder and revenge, including some truly nightmarish scenes involving rotted ( and re-animated  ) corpses that wouldn't look out of place in a Fulci movie!

It kind of descends more into melodrama in the final episode, but, certainly, the second episode is an absolute classic. You won't forget the morgue / nightmare scenes in a hurry. Bleak House, it ain't!

Starring the lovely Kate Nelligan if I remember correctly. It was quite daring for its day too.

It did indeed. And it was!
