Watching Fulci's 'Lizard in a Womans Skin' yesterday and it got me thinking; How many giallo's are set in London? I know i've seen a few but it was while ago...The only other one I can think of is 'The Cold Eyes of Fear',

I am guessing that the connection with England as a location and giallos stems from the books themselves. Most were reprints/translated versions of popular whodunnits from English authors like Agatha Christie and even Conan Doyle's Holmes. I haven't read any giallos' so to speak but i have no doubt that the English middle class featured heavily and became a staple of the novels as much as they did for the Euro cycle of films in the 70's.

One interesting aspect of the London based giallo films is the strangely skewed take Italians had of English counter-culture; with hippies often playing the role of the corruptors or drug addled wasters. I guess Easy Rider never went down too well over there?

:)

Any info on UK giallos would be appreciated.

Dunno if it could strictly be called a giallo (more straight Zombie movie I guess) but "Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue" sticks out as a strange setting for an Italian horror movie... Set, as it is, in the Peak District.

What Have They Done To Solange? and All The Colors Of The Dark are both set in London.

Not a giallo but Naschy's Dr. Jekyll Vs. The Werewolf has some scenes shot in London. There is a sequence with him dressed in full Mr. Hyde gear strolling round Soho which looks very strange. He tells a story in the documentary about how they did some secret filming round Soho with him dressed up and the patrons started shouting at him and insulting him because they thought he was some weirdo.

It's doesn't qualify as a giallo but Enzo G. Castellari's seductively sleazy Cold Eyes of Fear is also set in London as is Serigo Martino's lesser giallo, The Case of the Scoripon's Tail

I think The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave has some scenes set in London.

Thanks for the info!

I've been tempted to pick up 'All the Colours of the Dark' (this title should translate from the Italian as 'All the Colours of Darkness?). I guess i will take the plunge and grab one off Ebay later this month.

Is 'The Night Evelyn...' any good? I have seen an 'el-cheapo' disc (also on Ebay) but resisted. I assume the low price (about 3 quid?!) translates as 'poor print' 'pan-scan' 'probably cut'...etc..? Can anyone shed some light on this budget release?

The Martino 'Scorpion...' giallo is another one that I keep missing for one reason or another. Are there any legit dvd's around? I know it's one of his more popular giallo's. I really enjoyed 'Torso' = (slow starter with a killer final reel.)

RE: Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue. A beautiful film, check out Jorge Graus' 'Code of Hunters' for something (very) different from this director. Returning to 'Manchester Morgue', who was the 'cockney geezer' who dubbed Ray Lovelocks voice in that movie? It has me in stitches everytime I hear it. :)

If you didn't know, All the Colours of the Dark was released by Shriek Show earlier this month:

Is the Evelyn disc the Sinema Diablo version? If so, you'd need a widescreen TV to watch it properly as the disc is set to Anamorphic W/S and looks awful on a 4:3 TV. On the plus side, I think it's the most complete English language version. I think X-Rated (I'm sure they released Scorpion..check Xploitedcinema.com) in Germany are releasing Evelyn soon, I believe it's much better quality than the SB disc, but can't confirm that.

There's already another thread here discussing just that.

The best version to date of EVELYN is the one issued on videotape a few years ago by Something Weird.

X-Rated film did release the Case of the Scorpion's Tail on DVD in Germany - I have it. As somewhat of a giallo connoiseur, I was disappointed with the film, especially as I enjoyed Martino's Toro and All The Colours of the Dark. The print is very mediocre, too.
