While I'm inclined to laugh, I do hope that Rip gets over this bizarre spot of bother, especially as he is getting on a bit these days. I actually didn't realise he was that old.

He's always been one of those actors who, for me, has the ability of brightening up even the most mundane of films. For example I thought his performance as the exasperated, psychotically violent dad in the aforementioned Freddy Got Fingered was indeed priceless, and a prime example of how in the hands of a talented and game comic/character actor, even the most puerile and stupid material can be still be funny.

Ay any rate I'm glad to discover I'm not the only Freddy Got Fingered fan in the universe! :D

And in COMA as well. All I can say is "bugger me!" Mind you, this isn't the first time this has happened to a cult movie star- Gary Collins, star of four different episodes of THRILLER, was arrested in 2008 after "loosing off lead" in his home town, and in the music world, it happened recently to Allman Brothers guitar hero Dickie Betts, who had to be sectioned as a result.

I think Rip obviously has a drink problem which needs adressing. I can't imagine that he's so short of work he's actually taken to robbing banks as a career....

On a lighter note, who here has noticed that Rip actually belongs to a distinct breed of American actor- "movie stars with daft macho names"? Similar offenders include:

Rock Hudson
Tab Hunter
Gig Young
Ty Hardin
Slim Pickins
Powers Booth

Can anyone think of any others?

Rex Reason, the scientist from This Island Earth, who looks as if he'd be more at home on a football pitch, comes to mind.

You can see Torn running into a bit of bother with the police in Jean-Luc Godard's aborted One A.M/One American Movie from 1968. Godard's discarded footage is used, along with footage of Godard making the film, in a documentary by D.A. Pennebaker entitled One P.M. The police showing up was as a result of Jefferson Airplane playing a live show on the rooftops a la the Beatles in Let It Be, which apparently constituted some sort of public order nuisance. I'd seen a still of Torn being forced into a car by two policemen ages ago and had assumed that it was to do with whatever 'plot' Godard had concocted for the film. I was therefore rather surprised and amused to see Torn and others being manhandled by the cops for real (one of who demands that the cameras stop filming). Torn takes the opportunity to criticise the police action on-camera.

Read yesterday that Torn actually thought the bank was his home that he was breaking into (he left his shoes by where he entered. Not making this up, just too lazy right now to look for an article). As someone who's been that plastered (but thankfully doesn't have a gun or live near a bank) on many occasion and may even have spent a drunken night in the pokey I feel for the man.
