Any opinions on these shorts based on and/or influenced by HPL?
So far, the best ones most certainly are COOL AIR (1999) by Bryan Moore and FROM BEYOND (1999) by Bob Fugger.
Both stay very, very true to the source material and manage to bring Lovecraft's vision almost perfect to the screen. COOL AIR is completely in glorious black and white, while FROM BEYOND changes from b/w to color when the resonator is activated. Well acted, well shot and well edited, with some nice effects work despite the obvious limited budget, these two are probably the most faithful and also the best Lovecraft adaptations I've seen so far (together with the awesome silent movie THE CALL OF CTHULHU). I mean, I love Stuart Gordon's RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND, but if you read Lovecraft's stories it's obvious that they both fail completely as faithful adaptations. If you want the "real" Lovecraft, check out those two films on these volumes.
The other shorts I've watched so far aren't half bad either, particularly NYARLATHOTEP is pretty creepy and effective. AN IMPERFECT SOLUTION, a chapter of the RE-ANIMATOR story, is okay, but Jeffrey Combs is deeply missed.
I'm defnitely looking forward to the next shorts in this collection, a very welcome release from Microcinema/Lurker Films.
