okay so i'm just sorting through my dvds etc and setting up a database and so on.
just wondered how everyone sorts their collections?
mine are in chronological order.
when there is a box set I go by the earliest date but my question for others who do this is when there is a sequel do you put the films together regardless of whether of not they are boxed together or do you place them in the correct year?

Mine are all stored by releasing company - the spines look neater together.
All my collection is stored in a Filemaker database.

Mine are sorted alphabetically, with a couple of stars and directors being stored under their surname ands chronologically.
I also have a separate section for horror and sci-fi.

I put my film DVDs in alphabetical order, TV boxsets in chronological order and miscellaneous DVDs (music etc.) in any old order.

In broad basically useless catagories, supplemented by unordered stacks in various parts of the house.

I have approx 86 metres of shelf space (occupying 5 walls in 2 bedrooms) available for DVD storage. All but 4 metres are full. Another 16 metres arrives on Tuesday. Not sure what I'll do if I need more space in the future.
TV shows are segregated from movies (with a few exceptions).
Movies are in alphabetical order of title.
Box sets/double features etc: director and actor sets under surname; others under whatever seems suitable (e.g. set title or first movie in box).
All details on Access database, which - amongst many other things - contains individual movie records for box sets etc, and a "shelf location" for any movie not filed under its title.
Home recordings (approx 900) filed numerically under disc number (format "Dnnnnn"), so I would need to consult the database to find a particular "home recording" movie.

I used to sort them by release company, but since i moved last year there all over the place. I just make it into a game when i want to find something, kinda like a treasure hunt.

I like to be able to instantly find stuff (searching, like queueing, is a waste of life) so my collection is under genre first - Sci-Fi/Fantasy; War/Western; Crime/Thriller; Drama/Cult; Horror; Comedy; Japanese/Asian; TV; Box Sets; Documentaries - and then alphabetical order which I also have catalogued on my PC.

I've just been reorganizing my collection, but it's impossible to decide.
If I organise by company it makes it impossible to search by Name Director or Genre.
Then also there's the odd-shaped cases, if it's the same height and depth of a standard keep-case that's fine, otherwise it makes the collection look untidy.
Why can't everyone do DVD Spines to a set profile, I think it's something the DVD Consortium should have sorted out from the get go, then maybe our collections would look more like this:

And you wouldn't have to do any of that mucking about sorting by company, and also no certificates on the sides, as they aren't legally required.

However I sort them, within a week they need resorting to accommodate that week's new purchases. If I leave it a month, which is quite typical, its a major job, but a lot of fun deciding on a new system.
I enjoy moving stuff around and displaying different stuff at different times.

Initially tried sorting by genre, but with a good few Takashi Miike films in my collection, that proved to be a near impossible task...
So now I stick with good ol' alphabetical order. Which means Army Of Darkness is some distance from The Evil Dead.
The horror... ;)

I've got mine broken down by company, then the titles lined in the order they are released.
So all the little numbers at the bottom of the spine are in order.

Ah no you see you're doing it wrong, it should be under
Evil Dead 3 : Army of Darkness
Right after
Evil Dead, The
&
Evil Dead 2 : Dead By Dawn
Just like:
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes 2:Return of the Killer Tomatoes
