Am I the only person here who still buys tapes? Admittedly it has to be something that's not available on DVD for me - and it's amazing that there is still heaps of stuff not yet on DVD. And of course there's that lovely artwork too ;)

I don't buy them. I love all those pre-cert covers but generally the thought of suffering through panned/scanned video picture quality is depressing. What key favourite titles do you have that aren't available on DVD?

Yep, I still buy them but like Marc it has to be something not on DVD or an Italian crime film, which I'll buy even if it is on DVD because I collect them for the cover art. :)

Got to be honest, stopped collecting them. I don't even have my VCR coupled up any more. Its stuck in the cupboard.

My vcr is in the cupboard too. I only ever get it out when I get a new tape and want to transfer it to DVD-R.

I have a rack of 4 x VCRs (PAL and Multi-System - PAL, SECAM, NTSC), a Sony Hi-Fi Betamax deck and a laserdisc player, plus heaps of Mac based video and DVD software.

Oh, and one of these (http://www.gthelectronics.com/controlc.htm) and one of these (http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC300/index.php).

I can pretty much convert anything to DVD-R ;) If anybody needs anything doing, I'm yer man.

I won't do anything that's available in the shops though! Only ancient tapes that need archiving.

I'll do it for a small fee of course. Some tapes can be a lot of hassle though, but I always do my best.

Thanks.

I'm still respectable. I won't copy anything that's easily available.

Don't cut the sleeve up!

Make a hi-res scan and get someone to make you a custom cover. Such a shame to destroy the original sleeve.

It'll take 5 or 10 minutes to scan and re-size the cover so it fits into a DVD case. Print it out on nice glossy paper

You get the best of both that way. Like I said if you get stuck let me know.

I do yes but I've cut down a lot. Prior to moving to Mexico I was buying them at a steady pace mainly targeting pre-certs. While away I bought very few and since I've come home I've bought one rare video. If I still used eBay then I'd probably give in to temptation and buy them regularly again but with so many DVDs going OOP now and so cheap too I've put all of that on hold and am buying as many DVDs as possible.

If anybody here has any Strange But True? episodes (apart from the Hitchhiker episode) then could you either sell me the tape or record it onto DVD-r for me and I'll sort out a fee with you. I especially want/crave Stocksbridge Bypass/Angels.

That's usually how it was originally seen at the cinema though, unless the print was battered and worn. But it would have started out looking pristine.

I haven't bought a single pre-recorded tape since I got a DVD player. Still record stuff on VHS though, and have plenty of (mostly pro wrestling) tapes that still fill up a shelf or two.

I have sold all my taped except two ex rentals of the Incubus and Piranha, just for nostalgia. I still enjoy watching the trailers on the tapes. Anyone remember that Warner Home Video song? :)

I sold most of my video collection a good while ago, made a bit of cash because dvd still hadn't taken off properly (was probably the end of '98/start of '99 when I let them go.) I still keep hold of a few old pre-certs which probably aren't worth anything but have excellent/crazy artwork - I don't actually own a vhs player now so I can't watch them.

Hadn't picked up a tape for years but was in a rural charity shop the other day and couldn't resist picking up a couple of pre-certs with great covers - Small Town Massacre and Blackout. Haven't had a chance to watch them at a mates yet but they look pretty stinking. Blackout has one of the funniest warnings that I've seen on the front... something like "WARNING: This film is about psychotic killers, loose on the rampage." How could I pass that up?

Is Blackout the 1985 movie starring Richard Widmark and one of the Carradines? The cover is a guy in a leather gimp mask holding a knife....I've wanted to see that again for years but never been able to find a copy...

I remember the Small Town Massacre cover from my days spent in video stores way back when. I've never seen the film, but I remember the cover was the guy holding the Stanley knife dripping with blood.

I saw this being sold at a car boot sale years ago in a cardboard case. There was another title with it, that looked really gory but I can't remember the title. My parents wouldn't buy them for me as I was too young though. 'Small Town Massacre' is actually pretty decent - you can get it on DVD as Strange Behaviour aka 'Dead Kids'.

Is this the film that features a fancy dress party where a dance number suddenly breaks out?

I love that. The rest of the film is okay but that scene is pure gold.

There is a film called Blackout as you descibed above and was available on the Polygram/Spectrum video label, great film and well worth tracking down.

****... Sounds awesome! Think I'll have to give it a watch for that scene alone. I see that the new release of Strange Behaviour was trimmed by the BBFC for immitable suicide shots. Oh, and yeah, the cover does have a guy with a blood drenched stanley knife.

AndyBlade - It's not that Blackout, but it does have a Carradine in it - Robert Carradine. The cover is a pretty distinctive black and yellow design with 3 bad guys looming over a screaming woman, a guy firing a gun and a police car. The back sleeve has a guy gagging a woman.

I really miss the days of such great sleeve art - standing in the video shop as a wee guy in the early 80's was mindbending stuff :)
