Well, I watched this film and my brain threatened to go on strike once the credits were rolling. I have seen some bad stuff in my time, but… Anyway, the review:
After an incident involving an experimental explosive device of some kind, a small percentage of the populace of America (where else?) are mutated into an undead state. Grub Girl is one of these people. She was a hooker before the explosion, but she becomes an undead hooker known as a Grub! What this means is that she can feel absolutely nothing and can, let us say, expand her services in the world of prostitution. One of the flipsides to this condition is that she has an appetite for human flesh and guts, and if she does not like you, she will probably eat you! Anyway, the film deals with the, cough, events that lead up to her opening the first Grub brothel and is narrated by the Grub Girl herself between ‘scenes’.
Grub Girl is based on the comic of the same name by Glenn Danzig’s (of Misfits/Samhain/Danzig fame) Verotik imprint, which is itself based on a short story by subversive American horror author, Edward Lee. The film follows events in a very loose way – the basic story is there as per the comic, but the emphasis is placed more on the sex than anything else. Did I mention there is lots of sex? Disappointingly, there is virtually no gore! I counted only two short gore scenes in the film and they are very, very amateur and timid. This is at odds with the sexual content, which is hardcore. An electro/industrial soundtrack plays in the background during the main ‘scenes’, and this is far more interesting than what is being played out onscreen! A remix of one of Danzig’s own songs is played across the credits as well.
The film is supposed to fit into the HorrorPorn niche, which, in my opinion, is a very difficult balance to keep. Grub Girl falls into the ‘too much sex, not enough horror/gore’ trap that blights this subgenre and suffers badly for it. The sex scenes can go on for twenty minutes plus and I found myself getting very bored and resorting to the FF button on my remote. It is just a porn film really with an ‘attempt’ at a horror story. I have no idea what the director was trying to do, but it feels like he has been sold the source material and has done carte blanche with it! What Edward Lee makes of the film, I have no idea, but I know I would not be happy.
I found the sexual content most distasteful as it was very degrading toward the female sex. The original source material itself is quite violent in its treatment of the Grubs, but not like this. The Grubs in the comic may kill you if they feel like it and remain a ‘black widow’ style danger, but in the film, Grub Girl is very, very submissive. I think this is more of a sign of the state of modern US hardcore pornography than anything else, which I find a little disturbing.
The DVD itself is 4:3 fullscreen and Region 0, and the PQ is what you would expect from this type of movie; at times it gets very grainy indeed, especially in shaded/dark areas. The sound, I think, is supposed to be 2.0 stereo, but it sounded like dual mono to me! There is the usual chapter choice and two trailers for some of Craven Moorehead’s other, cough, ‘films’. I will not say here what they are called but I don’t think Mr Moorehead has much respect for women. Other than that there is nada.
Avoid this ‘movie’ like the plague. I’ve heard that there may be a sequel in the pipeline, but than that is normal for this kind of industry. I certainly will not be handing over my hard earned cash again.
1/5 (for the soundtrack!)
