The town of Whitehaven in Cumbria is gearing up to spearhead the digital era as it becomes the first place in the UK to lose the analogue TV signal.

I read that earlier. My Freeview box keeps telling me I must retune "early October", but I don't live near Cumbria. I guess we're somewhere toward the upper of that list of places to be done.

It can't come soon enough.A little bit of static in the atmosphere or me on the internet makes my freeview cough and splutter.(with an indoor ariel.)
Get the analogue off, boost the signal,Fry our brains.

The flats where I live have a communal aerial which belongs to NTL/Virgin. Unfortunately it doesn't support freeview boxes. How very convenient for them.
I was dead against this.
Until my mate Lincoln gave me a freeview box - now i dont use analogue at all.
I have an indoor ariel with booster, running into another booster, and just have to move it about and wait for it to 'bite'.
I actually like that about it, it reminds me of waiting for old tv's to 'warm up' and that Hancock radio-ham episode :D . BUT - not so cool fer yer OAPS that cant jiggle an ariel around and that, BUT! if the switchover means the signal is gonna boost aways this problem - bring it on.

We're looking at 30th September 2011 in my area. Then, I'm told we'll only have access to 22 channels. A lot better than being stuck with the 4 we have now, but still a long, long wait.

Been a hell of a big push here to get people sorted out before the switch over. It's a bit of a battle ground between sky & freeview, but there both cutting there arms off to throw out some great deals.
Amazing some people I know have been getting sky+ box & 2 standard multi-room boxes for £60 including installation.
My mam was offered a Panasonic 24" LCD with built in freeview for £240.
Maybe a bit of competition will do the public good.

Is that 60 quid a month? I know Sky with sports channels is close to 40 quid a month - an amount I just don't want to pay right now.

£60 for all the initiall equipment! I'm sure my mate's subscription is about £50 per month, sky+ with movies and multi-room no sports.

Yeah - along the lines of what I thought then. I used to pay Sky 35 a month, but moved home and had it switched off. I can afford 35 quid a month without a problem, but to be honest I resent paying it to watch one premium channel. Most of what I watch otherwise (which isn't much at all) is on Freeview anyway.
Basically what I'm saying is - we take for granted we must pay for TV. When I looked at Sky it was a lousy value proposition.

I cancelled my sky at the begining of the year & on the 5th April it was suppost to be switched off, to date the whole package is still on & I haven't been charged a penny! I've kept the email stating the cut off date just incase.
Even though I still have sky, I mostly watch freeview though! freeview has in my opinion better contrast in it's signal compared to sky & on the whole I prefer the image I get from freeview.
