Is there such thing as a DVD Recorder that takes double layer discs?

Most new dvd recorders such as the Panasonic DMR-EX85 will write to dual-layer discs. The problem is that blank dual-layer discs are pretty expensive, making them cost ineffective for ahem - backing-up - dvds.

Does anyone know if its possible to upgrade the firmware on an old panasonic recorder.? The one i have uses text menuing. I bought my parents a newer panasonic and it uses thumnails for menuing which i like best. I know some recorders let you download firmware upgrades but im not sure baout panasonic...anyone know?

Also does anyone know if there are any pc programms that let you view part recorded discs (not finalised)
